2. Waste Management
This team focuses on identifying, evaluating
and developing financial feasible business
opportunities in an environmentally responsible
and compliant manner in the areas of:
a. solid waste beneficiation
b. waste collection, recycling and
processing
c. used lube oil collection, recycling and
processing
d. waste to energy
e. fine coal beneficiation
f. inorganic and organic chemicals
3. Health and Beauty
A Cosmetic Technical Support Group was
formed to provide specialized technical support
for SMMEs within the cosmetic industry. The
team was initially structured with the intention
of providing predominantly technical support.
However, as the number of businesses
being incubated increased and the needs
of prospective entrepreneurs became more
diverse, it was imperative that a more holistic
approach be taken during the development
of these SMMEs. This subsequently led to
the inclusion of both technical and business
support in the cluster’s service offering. The
team enjoys the support of the Cosmetic,
Toiletry and Fragrance Association of South
Africa (CTFA) and is also associated with the
Society of Cosmetics Chemists (Coschem).
4. Liquid Chemicals and
Supplier Development
All chemical projects linked to the acrylic acid
value chain falls within this portfolio. These
include the production of crude acrylic acid,
glacial acrylic acid, ethyl acrylate and butyl
acrylate used in super absorbent polymers,
detergents, water treatment, food packaging,
emulsions and textiles to name a few. A second
major focus of this cluster is assisting Sasol
suppliers to grow their businesses, saving
distressed businesses and enabling suppliers
in transformation to improve their BEE status.
5. Social Enterprise
Development
The drive behind the Community projects is
empowerment, wealth and job creation at
grass root level with specific focus on BEE and
the empowerment of women. The focus areas
identified were the Cosmetics industry, Candle
Making businesses, Veggie tunnels and
bakeries. Assistance in these areas includes:
a. The creation of sustainable SMME’s
with a unique value proposition
b. Creating Infrastructures and building
capacity to enable growth
c. Innovative and professional branding
and brand positioning
d. Customised market development
and product positioning to address
specific market needs, e.g. funeral
candles and “long burning”, “non-
dripping” candles
e. Designing unique channels to market
f. Creating economies of scale by
stabling associations, co-operations
and mini-franchises
g. Including local monopolies and strong
traditional intermediaries in the value
chain
