of Wycliffe, and denounced any who should favour
them, as incurring excommunication. It chanced
that an old knight was present, by name Cornelius
Clonne, who had ardently embraced the new opinions.
With regard to the Blessed Sacrament, in particular,
he persisted in holding Wycliffe's view, that the substance
of bread remained. On the following day,
the eve of Trinity, Cornelius went to hear Mass at
the Dominican convent in London. A young student
was celebrating it. At the Elevation he looked up
to gaze with unbelieving eyes on the lowly Host,
and the thought " It is only bread " seems to have
presented itself vividly to his mind. He looked again
as the celebrant broke the sacred particle, and beheld
with his " own eyes" real flesh, torn and
bleeding, divided into three portions. He called
his esquire, but the man's eyes were closed and
he could not see. The third particle, which was to
be put into the chalice, retained its former white
appearance, but, in the middle of it, the Name of
Jesus was distinctly written in letters of blood. It
is not stated whether the celebrant witnessed this
manifestation. He narrated it on the following day
