The riches of the English sees were founded on
the grants of land which the munificence of either
prince or individual had conferred upon them. It
must be remembered that all through the first and
second period, money was represented by land, and,
to a very great extent, by land only. The second
period added to the already existing sees, Chichester
1070, Bangor 1092, Ely 1109, Carlisle 1133, whilst
the existing see of Dorchester was transferred to
Lincoln 1067. i
There was unity of worship and of sacrifice : all
partook of one spiritual food. The Mass was the
great act of sacrifice round which everything else
converged. We are familiar with the old Xorman
church, which lias come down to us from our an-

cestors. Let us picture to ourselves, if we can,
those structures, not as now, chill and white-washed,
but full of the fragrance of the living Presence. Besides
the daily " Mass, which was as the rising of the
sun in the worship of our forefathers, the "psalmody
of the Divine Office continued uninterrupted even in
the smaller parish churches ".2

The magnificent

turgy of the Church, blending together the psalms of
the old law with the wisdom of the Cross W conveyed in
the new, was thus within reach of all. To-day we have
hardly put off our penal apathy of ceremonial, and we
could find it in our hearts to envy the liturgical abun-
