In the adversity which fell upon Henry's last
troubled years as king, he made for himself a staunch
friend in William Waynfleet, who became Bishop of
Winchester in 1447, in succession to Cardinal Beaufort.
On Henry's first visit to Winchester, he found
Waynfleet as Provost, and was so struck by his
administration that he set the Winchester master
over his own royal " foundation at Eton. Waynfleet
was himself the founder of Magdalen College, Oxford.
A devoted adherent of both Henry and Mar-

garet of Anjou, he wrould doubtless have become
primate in 1454, on the death of Archbishop Kemp,
if the king's power and favour had been in their
normal state. Already the crown and sceptre were
passing away from the House of Lancaster. The
