Driver-Controlled Main Differential Lock<br />

2. Compress the shift shaft spring as required<br />

and install it between the back of the fork and<br />

differential wall inside the differential. Figure<br />

6.17.<br />

3. Align the spring and bore in the shift fork with<br />

the shift shaft bore in the differential.<br />

4. Install the shift shaft through the bore in the<br />

differential, fork and spring until it is against<br />

the shift fork. Figure 6.18.<br />

5. If required, lubricate a new O-ring with axle<br />

lubricant. Install the O-ring into the piston<br />

groove.<br />

6. Install the piston and O-ring assembly into the<br />

shift cylinder, bevel end first. Push on the piston<br />

until it is against the bottom of the cylinder. Figure<br />

6.19.<br />

7. Apply a continuous 0.06-inch (1.5 mm) diameter<br />

bead of Loctite® flange sealant, <strong>Meritor</strong> part<br />

number 2297-D-7076, around the DCDL cylinder<br />

threads..<br />

8.Turn the shift cylinder and piston assembly to<br />

the right until it bottoms in the differential casting<br />

bore. Figure 6.20.<br />

9. Position the shift collar over the fork. The large<br />

splines of the collar must face toward the main<br />

differential. Use a rubber mallet to tap the shift<br />

collar through the nubs of the shift fork. Figure<br />

6.21.<br />
