<strong>Washington</strong> Council <strong>for</strong> Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect<br />
Children’s Day in <strong>Washington</strong> <strong>State</strong><br />
Children’s Day is the second Sunday of October every year. In 1997,<br />
<strong>Washington</strong> Council <strong>for</strong> Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (WCPCAN)<br />
committed to raising the public’s awareness of Children’s Day by providing minigrants<br />
to communities across the state to help them plan and implement<br />
Children’s Day celebrations. This year WCPCAN expanded our outreach ef<strong>for</strong>ts<br />
to increase community-based participation by focusing on child health and safety<br />
and expanding our outreach to special populations.<br />
<strong>Results</strong><br />
★ Received 20 grant applications. This is a record number.<br />
★ The mini-grant review committee included parent participation.<br />
★ Designed outreach materials with key messages to increase program<br />
capacity to leverage resources around child health and safety.<br />
★ The Thurston Community Network funded four programs, Whatcom<br />
Community Network funded one program and Island County/Stanwood<br />
Community Public Health and Safety Network participated.<br />
★ Sent do-it-yourself Children’s Day planning packets to 171 programs and/or<br />
organizations.<br />
★ We had tremendous media support. Children’s Day articles were also<br />
featured in seven “state” publications.<br />
★ Our events included a health fair <strong>for</strong> Hispanic families, a cultural awareness<br />
day at a housing authority facility, a homeless teen task <strong>for</strong>ce, an event<br />
fostering relationships in a rural community, a fireside chat to mobilize the<br />
African American community to support academic achievement, and a<br />
culturally significant tribal celebration.<br />
★ Over 755 children, 476 adults, 55 organizations, and 168 volunteers<br />
participated in WCPCAN funded events.<br />
