In their absence, unemployment andpoverty spread, plaguing the neighborhood withcrime and hopelessness. By listening closely to thecommunity, Bethel New Life realized it would notwork on housing alone but focus holistically onparticipatory decisionmaking, the community’squality of life, and environmental integrity. Thisprofile highlights grants that foster an organization’sdevelopment of smarter growth strategies based oncommunity input, creative financing, faith,determination, and tireless innovation.Project ProfileLocated in the Chicago neighborhood of WestGarfield Park, Bethel New Life (Bethel) is a multiproperty,multi-service community developmentcorporation (CDC) that provides services in housingand economic development, employment, culturalarts, community building, seniors, and familysupport. Through changing community needs andfoundation priorities, Bethel relies on faith-basedvalues, asset-based approaches, and collaborationswith community and partner organizations to offerinnovative, adaptive solutions.Starting with modest bricks-and-mortar housingissues, Bethel has consistently overcome naysayers,government red-tape, and impossible economicenvironments to create a safe haven in this poor,disenfranchised neighborhood. Mary Nelson,Bethel’s president and CEO, recalls that it becameclear that most, “Affordable housing isn’t affordableto people who don’t have jobs, and living-wagejobs, so that got us into jobs. Then we saw thatpeople can’t keep jobs if they’re sick and don’t havehealth care, and young people can’t get jobs if theschools don’t teach them.” Bethel’s goals are topromote, “a healthier, sustainable community witheconomic viability, environmental integrity, highquality of life for all, and public participation indecisionmaking.” 32 The organization has evolvedinto a fully functional community developmentcorporation with an annual operating budget ofmore than $13.5 million and a smart growthproperty portfolio that includes a campus (Beth-Anne campus), numerous affordable housing sites,and a transit-oriented development—the BethelCommercial Center.A view of the lobby, child care center, and senior residence at the newBeth-Anne Life Center.
