A computer program, for example, is considered a literary workprotected by copyright in the United States and an increasing number of foreign countries.In most countries, the place of first publication determines the availability of copyright protection.Some countries require certain formalities <strong>to</strong> <strong>main</strong>tain copyright protection. Many othercountries, particularly member countries of the Bern Union, offer copyright protection withoutthese formalities. Still others offer little or no protection for the works of foreign nationals.
