Policing inthe 21st century requires a broad base of knowledge andskill. This challenging and rewarding two-year diplomaprovides potential police officers with knowledge and skillsin leadership techniques, policing, criminalistics, investigativetechniques, criminology, law, psychology, sociology andhuman relations.The diploma program consists of 61 credits and can becompleted through a full-time day program or part-timeevening studies. The full-time day program is completed overtwo years, with one intake in the fall term. Part-time eveningstudies can begin in the fall, winter or spring/summer terms,subject to course offerings.Career potentialGraduates from Police Studies may gain employment withthe RCMP, municipal police services (e.g. Edmonton PoliceService, Calgary Police Service) across Canada, the CN Police,Sheriff’s Department and the Canadian Forces Military Police.Graduates must apply directly to a police service and meet itsminimum standards.TRANSFERABILITYINTERNAL OPPORTUNITIESMacEwan University is committed to providing bridgingand laddering opportunities to its certificate and diplomagraduates. Graduates of this diploma program may begranted up to 60 credits to MacEwan University’s Bachelorof Applied Human Services degree program. Students areadvised to consult a program advisor for the Bachelorof Applied Human Services degree program for specificadmission requirements.EXTERNAL TRANSFERAll courses completed for the Police and Investigations,Police Studies Major diploma are credit courses and may betransferable individually toward further study at other Albertainstitutions. Students presenting a completed diploma inthis program may be eligible to receive up to 60 credits atAthabasca University and a block transfer of 15 credits to theBachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice Major at Mount RoyalUniversity.
