ARTE-110Drawing I4 Credits (30:60:0 hours)In this course students are introduced to the elements and principles ofdrawing. Students develop foundational skill working with traditionalmediums such as charcoal, graphite, ink wash and conte. Studiesinclude achromatic value scales, perspective, gesture, contour andtonal descriptions. Additionally, students are challenged to innovatewith new drawing media, marks and methods, and develop analyticalskills to critique their work. Attendance at visiting artist lectures and artexhibitions outside of scheduled class hours may be required.ARTE-111Design I5 Credits (30:90:0 hours)This course provides an intensive introduction to the visual language:its theories and vocabulary. Students work with two dimensionalform to study the structures and principles of composition, principlesof illusionistic space, visual dynamics and colour theory. Mediumsand materials include acrylic paint, photo collage and achromaticpapers. The critique practice is introduced. Development of problemsolving skills, communication skills and productive work habits areemphasized. Attendance at visiting artist lectures and art exhibitionsoutside of scheduled class hours may be required.ARTE-120Drawing II4 Credits (30:60:0 hours)This course further develops the principles in Drawing I. Sustainedtonal drawing, life drawing, photocopy/lasercopy technologies anddrawing installation are introduced. Emphasis is on observationaldrawing skills and a broadening of the definition of “drawing”. Studentsmay be required to attend visiting artist lectures or art exhibitionsoutside of scheduled class hours.Prerequisites: Minimum grade of C- in ARTE 110.ARTE-121Design II4 Credits (30:60:0 hours)This course provides an in-depth study of the visual language. Workingprimarily with paint on board, assignments are designed to stimulateanalytical and creative thinking. Problem solving skills and productivework habits are emphasized. Attendance at visiting artist lectures andart exhibitions outside of scheduled class hours may be required.Prerequisites: Minimum grade of C- in ARTE 111.ARTE-123Sculpture I3 Credits (15:45:0 hours)This is an introductory 3D studio-based course on the concepts,materials and techniques of traditional and contemporary sculpture.Students study various forms of 3-dimensional artwork includingabstraction, the figure, mixed media and installation.ARTE-202Art History III3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)Beginning with the foundations of modernism in the mid-nineteenthcentury, this course examines the major movements in art, architecture,photography and design developed in Europe and North Americaup to the later part of the twentieth century. Relevant art historicalmethodologies are introduced, and selected works are examined withinthe framework of a contextual and formal analysis.ARTE-203Contemporary Art Issues3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)This course is designed to familiarize the student with art made from1950 onwards. It deals with the various styles, media, issues andartists that make up the contemporary art scene. Students are activelyinvolved in discussions and in the analysis of art, texts and ideas.They are required to research various topics and artists for both oralpresentations and assigned essays. Students may be expected to attendsome lectures and exhibitions outside of scheduled class time.Prerequisites: Minimum grade of C- in ARTE 202. Co-requisites:ARTE 231.ARTE-230Drawing III4 Credits (30:45:0 hours)Drawing III provides an in-depth study of the subjects, mediumsand techniques examined in Drawing II. Colour drawing mediais introduced. Emphasis is on refining skills in observation andrepresentation. Students may be required to attend visiting artistlectures and art exhibitions outside of scheduled class hours.Prerequisites: Minimum grade of C- in ARTE 120 or consent ofthe program.ARTE-231Painting8 Credits (60:120:0 hours)In this course, students work primarily with acrylic paint. The ideasdealt with in the course are broad in scope. Emphasis is placed oncontemporary painting and its relationship to the history of painting.Studio work is supplemented by frequent slide lectures and critiques.Students may be required to attend some lectures and art exhibitionsoutside of scheduled class hours. Co-requisites: ARTE 203.ARTE-240Drawing IV4 Credits (30:45:0 hours)Drawing IV continues with the study of the concepts examined inDrawing III; however, emphasis is on the development of personalconcepts and the exploration of innovative mediums and methods.Students may be required to attend visiting artist lectures and artexhibitions outside of scheduled class hours.Prerequisites: Minimum grade of C- in ARTE 230.ARTE-241Intermedia8 Credits (70:110:0 hours)In this course, the students work with various media as well as withnew combinations of traditional materials. Within Intermedia, it ispossible to explore virtually any type of media or material that servesto complete a concept: sculpture, installation, video, photo works,performance art, assemblage, photocopy or lasercopy technology, digitalvideo, and digital image manipulation.
