Bachelor of CommerceSchool of Businesswww.MacEwan.ca/BComThe Bachelor of Commerce focuses on the development ofbasic business and managerial competencies combined withan understanding of globalization and its implications. Theprogram is structured to provide comprehensive preparationfor management positions with both for-profit and not-forprofitorganizations as well as the public sector.The degree provides students with knowledge and criticalunderstanding of commerce and management, and theability to gather, review, evaluate and interpret informationrelevant to business and management. Key professionalskills are taught: ethical business practices, presenting,writing, teamwork, technology, problem analysis, decisionmakingand research, including the opportunity to engage inindependent research and practice. These skills are integratedacross all courses in the program.The program consists of three types of courses: core, majorand elective. Core courses develop fundamental skills andabilities in business and management. Upon completionof core courses, the student will choose one of four majors:Accounting, International Business, Management or SupplyChain Management Co-op. The courses in the majors deepenknowledge of business within a focal area and the electivecourses broaden education beyond business and tailor thedegree to the student’s interests. The program will preparestudents for graduate studies in related fields.Accounting majorThe Accounting major prepares students to be able to analyzeand solve problems and participate in the managementof business functions and strategy within an organization.Students will learn to contribute to collaborative,information-sharing and joint-planning processes. They willacquire the necessary qualitative and quantitative skills forcomplex problem solving in an accounting and businessenvironment. With a generalist knowledge of all areas ofbusiness and in-depth study of advanced topics, students areable to continue with professional accreditation, graduatelevelstudy or to assume an accounting position.International Business majorThe International Business major prepares students toconduct business in an increasingly globalized environment.Students will learn how to apply concepts from functionalareas, such as marketing and finance, within the globalbusiness setting and how international business practicediffers from domestic business. Students will also learnhow the language, culture and political economy influencebusiness in different countries and regions.Management majorThe Management major focuses on the management oforganizations. It provides students with a solid foundationin the fundamentals of business and specializationin key aspects of leadership, including team building,conflict resolution, consulting, change management andorganizational development. The major is flexible, allowingstudents to study a range of contexts: local and globalindustry, the not-for-profit sector and government. It alsohas significant opportunity for the student to enhance theirstudies through business and non-business electives.Supply Chain ManagementCo-op majorThe Supply Chain Management Co-op major preparesstudents to analyze business problems and participate in thestrategic coordination and integration of business functionswithin an organization as well as with supply-chain partners.Students will learn to make general business decisions andsupply-chain specific decisions in the areas of procurement,supplier management, inventory control, operations planningand control, logistics, e-business and demand management.This major has a co-operative education component thatallows students to gain valuable work experience whilecompleting the degree.Career potentialGraduates of the Bachelor of Commerce program havea wide variety of options: they could choose to work incorporations, governments, not-for-profit organizations orperhaps start their own businesses. Careers in disciplinessuch as finance, marketing, accounting, banking,business consulting, management information systems,human resources management, team and organizationaldevelopment, small business management, internationalbusiness, operations management, purchasing or logistics areavailable.
