The nervous, digestive,respiratory, endocrine, urinary and reproductive systems as well as thespecial senses are studied. Prerequisites: MTST 105 and MTST 120. Mayalso be taken as a Co-requisites.MTST-125Body Functioning I3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)This course is an introduction to the physiology of the body. Thenervous, musculoskeletal, cardiovascular and protective systemsare emphasized to explain the relationships between body fluiddistribution, sensory stimulation and the modulation of painperception. Prerequisites: MTST 105. May also be taken as a Co-requisite.MTST-126Body Functioning II3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)This course integrates the nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular andimmune systems in their regulation of the functioning of the body.Hormonal and autonomic control of the respiratory, digestive, urinaryand reproductive systems are emphasized along with an examination ofthe special senses.Prerequisites: MTST 125.MTST-131Techniques I3 Credits (30:30:30 hours)This course examines the principles, procedures and techniquesinvolved in giving a basic massage therapy treatment. Introductorymassage techniques, draping, and the use of posture and bodymechanics are presented. Students are introduced to indications/contraindications and the principles of basic massage therapytreatments. Furthermore, students develop and utilize palpation skills inidentifying bony landmarks and soft tissues structures.MTST-137Therapeutic Relations1 Credits (30:15:0 hours)This course provides the student with the fundamental knowledgeof ethics involved in the development of therapeutic relationships.The application of communication techniques and client/therapistresponses to massage therapy are explored. Through discussion andexperiential learning, the following topics are examined: personalgrowth, establishing trust, boundaries, interview skills, culturaldifferences, self-care, body image, transference and counter-transferenceand the management of the therapists personal values in clientrelationships. This course also explores working with emotionalsituations, abuse survivors and the chronically ill.MTST-142Techniques II3 Credits (30:30:30 hours)This course introduces massage therapy treatment fundamentals andtechniques. Students develop soft tissue assessment skills, greater tissuesensitivity as well as the ability to work with increased tissue depth.Prescribing appropriate home care and principles of therapist selfcare is emphasized. Fundamentals of professional documentation isalso reinforced.Prerequisites: MTST 131, MTST 120 and MTST 125.MTST-143Techniques III3 Credits (30:30:30 hours)This course involves an in-depth study and practice of hydrotherapy,lymph drainage, and trigger point therapy techniques. Students learnto recognize contraindications and indications of these treatmentmodalities as they relate to common pathological conditions. Studentsfurther refine palpation skills required for effective application ofthese techniques.Prerequisites: MTST 142.MTST-146Body Movements3 Credits (35:10:0 hours)This course consists of an in depth analysis of the structure and musclefunction of human movement and gait. Anatomy of upper and lowerextremity joints is reviewed. The physical basis of movement andmuscle function is examined. Basic movements and sports activitiesare analyzed.Prerequisites: MTST 120MTST-151Critical Review of Massage Literature1 Credits (15:0:15 hours)Students locate, evaluate and discuss professional literature in massagetherapy in order to be able to use research in their practice.Prerequisites: MTST 102.MTST-155Assessment for Massage Therapists I2 Credits (25:20:0 hours)The basic theory for assessment is presented. Assessment of the adultbody (musculoskeletal) includes postural and gait assessment, rangeof-motionand muscle testing. The process for recording the assessmentis an integral part of the course. Application is to the upper body.Prerequisites or Co-requisites: MTST 146.MTST-156Assessment for Massage Therapists II2 Credits (25:20:0 hours)The theory and techniques from MTST 155 are expanded with emphasison the lower body and clients with special needs. Documentation in amultidisciplinary environment is addressed.Prerequisites: MTST 155.MTST-161Clinical Practice I1 Credits (0:0:45 hours)This course introduces students to the practice of massage therapy in asupervised clinical setting.
