English as a Second LanguageFaculty of Arts and Sciencewww.MacEwan.ca/ESLThe MacEwan English Language Institute (MELI) offers a fullrange of courses and services to facilitate entry into postsecondaryprograms and to help bridge the communicationgap between English and other languages.MELI offers full-time and part-time courses for Canadiancitizens, permanent residents and international students whowant to improve their English skills, whether for generalcommunication or for academic study. A variety of specialpurposelanguage training courses are also offered.FULL-TIME STUDIESThree 14-week terms in English as a Second Language (ESL)are offered during the year at seven levels (beginning toadvanced academic).The higher levels – Advanced Academic ESL I, AdvancedAcademic ESL II and English for Academic Purposes (EAP)– focus on English for academic studies. They are designedfor English language learners who wish to complete highschool studies, continue to post-secondary studies orre-enter their professions in Canada. Instruction in academiclanguage skills is in the areas of reading, writing, speakingand listening. Grammar and pronunciation instruction isintegrated into these four skill areas at each level.The lower levels – Introductory ESL to IntermediateAcademic ESL II – focus on English communication skillsfor success in the community and the classroom with anemphasis on speaking and listening skills.Modern computer labs provide computer-assistedinstruction at all levels, and language labs provideopportunities for speaking and listening practice.Participation in class is an essential component of thelanguage learning process.PART-TIME STUDIESStudents unable to attend full-time day classes can take arange of part-time evening courses in writing, speaking,grammar and English for Special Purposes, including thefollowing:• TOEFL Preparation• IELTS Preparation• CAEL Preparation• English for Health Care Workers• English for Nursing• Technical Writing for New Canadian Engineers• English for Business• English for the WorkplaceCAREER POTENTIALESL prepares students for academic upgrading, employmentor college and university. Teaching English as a ForeignLanguage (TEFL) is for students planning to teach abroad.Working with ESL Learners is for students working orplanning to work as educational assistants in schools withESL learners. Credit may be granted by the Special NeedsEducational Assistant program for TAST 104 upon successfulcompletion of Working with ESL Learners, Modules I and II.ADMISSIONCanadian Citizens or Permanent ResidentsApplicants must have completed the equivalent of grade 10either in Canada or in their native country. Students applyingfor government funding must have completed 1,250 hours ofLINC training or the equivalent of LINC 4.Students under 18 years of age are not accepted exceptwith special permission. A placement test is administered todetermine students’ starting levels.APPLICATION PROCESSFull time• Contact the ESL office for pre-screening.• Apply at www.applyalberta.ca and pay the $70.00 nonrefundableapplication fee. Print the receipt.• If the applicant is not able to use the ApplyAlbertaweb site, applications can be made in person at CityCentre Campus.• Call the ESL office to arrange for a placement test.Bring the receipt for the application fee to the placement test.Part timeUse the Personal and Professional Development Database tosearch for, enrol in, and pay for ESL Part time courses.INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTSESL courses for international students are providedthrough MacEwan’s University Studies Internationalprogram.
