While interpreting audience and communicationrequirements, students focus on the application of effective designstructures that balance the form and function of a publication.Prerequisites: VCPR 210, VCDI 223 and VCDE 233.VCDE-382Advertising Design3 Credits (15:45:0 hours)Key principles of targeting a market or consumer segment areintroduced as students explore design and advertising. Relating tolarge group audiences as a market is a central issue in this course. Theadvertising message, formats for common ad copy and productionmethods are considered as students develop several promotional andadvertising designs.Prerequisites: VCOM 221 or VCMI 221 and VCOM 223 or VCMI 223 andVCOM 224 or VCMI 224.VCDE-383Information Design3 Credits (30:30:0 hours)Whether it is a train schedule, a set of instructions or a signagesystem, designers facilitate communication through visuals. Studentsexamine the processes involved in the organization, synthesis andvisual presentation of complex information with the goal of making itaccessible to an audience. The design of symbols, forms, infographicsand wayfinding systems are explored throughout this course with aspecial emphasis on typography, hierarchies of information, legibilityand readability.Prerequisites: VCOM 224 or VCMI 224 and VCOM 223 or VCMI 223and VCOM 221 or VCMI 221.VCDF-100Drawing Foundations I3 Credits (15:45:0 hours)In this survey course, students learn to analyze and represent observedsubjects by applying the principles of linear perspective. Exercises instructural analysis develop skills in the drawing of three-dimensionalobjects. Also, students focus on the formal principles of pictorialcomposition and investigate the expressive potential of drawing.VCDF-101Drawing Foundations II3 Credits (15:45:0 hours)In this survey course, students are introduced to media, mark-makingand observational exercises with a focus on rapid visualization. Studentsalso learn how drawing is used in the generation and explorationof visual ideas through the study of line, gesture and other drawingtechniques. The course emphasizes the human figure as the subjectmatter for observational and conceptual exercises.Prerequisites: VCDF 100.VCDF-1102 Dimensional Design Foundations3 Credits (15:45:0 hours)In this survey course, students are introduced to the design principlesthat influence visual organization, visual perception and the use ofcolour in two-dimensional design. In a hands-on environment, studentsacquire the fundamentals of visual language and sensitivity to visualform through the exploration of visual dynamics, contrast, unity andvariety. Given a design project, students develop solutions to simplecommunication design problems. Through group activities and critique, students give and receive feedback to improve their work.VCDF-1203 Dimensional Design Foundations3 Credits (15:45:0 hours)In this course, students are introduced to the fundamental elementsand principles of three-dimensional design as they relate to visualcommunication in the built environment. Through a series of handsonprojects, students develop an understanding of three-dimensionaldesign composition, strength and stability, drawing for threedimensionaldesign, and design process. Through group activities andcritique, students give and receive feedback to improve their work.VCDF-130Design History I3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)This survey course introduces the socio-cultural and stylistic movementsof art and design from pre-history to the 17th century. Students areintroduced to the vocabulary of the field and they study the people, thekey events, and the progression of design movements at the foundationof contemporary design. Artifacts of western and non-Europeancivilizations including architecture, furniture, products, interior design, clothing, and visual communication design are examined in the contextof design history.VCDF-140Design History II3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)This survey course continues the study of design history. Studentsare introduced to the historical periods from the early 17th centurythrough the industrial era, modernism and postmodernism. Historicinfluences present in contemporary objects and visual communicationsare examined. There is a special emphasis in the cultural context ofall aspects of the built environment, architecture, furniture, products, interior, clothing and communication design, as well as trends and stylechanges occurring during the 20th century.VCDI-222Digital Modeling3 Credits (15:45:0 hours)In this course, traditional 3D design concepts are used as the startingpoint for the skill and knowledge needed to design in virtual space.Students continue to develop an understanding of light, texture andshape. These components are explored through digital modelingexercises. Examples, demonstrations and increasingly complex projectsprovide the groundwork for the challenges of creating a convincingdigital model.Prerequisites: VCOM 220, VCOM 221, VCOM 222, VCOM 223 andVCOM 224.390Grant MacEwan University • A C A D E m I CRefer to the Online Alberta Transfer Guide at www.transferalberta.ca for transfer opportunitiesC A L E N D A R 2012/2013 • www.MacEwan.ca
