LATN-302Intermediate Latin II3 Credits (75:0:0 hours)In this sequel to LATN 301, students continue to strengthen theirreading and writing skills at the intermediate level in Latin. The courseincludes composition, the acquisition of additional vocabulary, andmore complex syntactical and grammatical structures which enablestudents to read, understand and translate increasingly complex originalintermediate Latin texts.Prerequisites: Minimum grade of C- in LATN 301LEGL-100Introduction to Law I3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)Students are given an overview of the areas of substantive law that areof special interest to the office assistant student. Topics included are thejudicial system and the constitution, contracts, tort law, criminal law,and civil law procedures.LEGL-104Introduction to Law II3 Credits (30:30:0 hours)Students continue the overview of substantive law provided inIntroduction to Law I. The student is introduced to the law governingwills and inheritance, family law, personal property and real property.Students are introduced to the civil litigation process from the openingof a file through to drafting documents and procedure to trial. Studentsare introduced to the rules and procedures governing this area of lawand learn how to draft pleadings and documents typically used in alitigation practice.Prerequisites: LEGL 100.LEGL-108Administrative Law3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)Students are introduced to the area of the law concerned withadministrative boards and review of the actions of those boards by theCourts. The law is discussed in terms of principles applicable to theboards’ hearings and what principles of review and appeal are possibleto the Courts. The relationship between the citizen and governmentis explored by examining specific commissions and authoritiesestablished by government.LEGL-110Introduction to Legal Research3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)Students are introduced to the fundamental elements of legal researchincluding a study of primary and secondary research materials. Thiscourse focuses on the legal research tasks commonly undertaken in alegal working environment, including researching and citing case law,statutes and regulations.LEGL-130Corporate Procedures3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)Students learn the procedural and substantive law governingAlberta proprietorships, partnerships and corporations, and federalcorporations, as well as the processes to register and maintain theregistrations of such organizations.LEGL-140Introduction to the Law Office3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)Students examine the organization and operation of the law office.Topics covered include law office systems and billing, avoidance ofunauthorized practice of law, ethics, dealing with the client, and timemanagement. The Legal Profession Act and Rules of the Law Society ofAlberta are reviewed.LEGL-150Residential Real Estate Transactions3 Credits (30:30:0 hours)Students learn how to assist a lawyer on a residential real estatetransaction from opening to closing of the file. They master the basicprinciples of Alberta real estate law and the Alberta Land Titles systemas these relate to the buying, financing and selling of residentialproperties. Students examine the Alberta Real Estate Association’sapproved Real Estate Purchase Contract and learn what searches arerequired, how to apply the results, prepare a Statement of Adjustmentsand other necessary documents on a mock file. Finally, they distinguishbetween and complete both traditional closings and Western LawSocieties’ Protocol closings.LEGL-160Civil Litigation Procedures I3 Credits (30:30:0 hours)Students are introduced to the steps taken on a civil litigation file. Fromopening the file, to preparing for trial and obtaining judgment, studentswork on mock files, drafting legal documents and tracking deadlines.LEGL-170Technology in the Law Office I3 Credits (30:15:0 hours)Students continue to work with word processing software used in legaloffices in preparing documents relating to a law firm using advancedfunctions. Students achieve an intermediate level of competence whichincludes the ability to manage desktop and electronic files, incorporatetables and columns in documents, and produce brochures. Students areintroduced to other software commonly used in law firms.Prerequisites: OADM 103.LEGL-180Financial Procedures for the Law Office3 Credits (30:15:0 hours)Students study law office administration, with a focus on theprocedures and concepts used in law office accounting/trust accounting.LEGL-210Business Law I3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)Students are introduced to the Canadian legal system and substantiveareas of law that are of special interest to the business student. Topicsof study include tort, contract, business ethics, agency, partnership andcorporations. The student acquires a general knowledge of some of thebasic principles of business law and is able to apply them to everydaybusiness situations.
