The causes, symptoms and treatment of commonly diagnosedphysical/organic, social, emotional and behavioural disorders areconsidered. Students examine a range of disturbances from a strengthbasedand family perspective, in terms of both assessment andmanagement. Participants access their own resources and resilienciesas they address issues that are traumatic for self and clients. The role ofthe Child and Youth Care Worker in settings providing mental healthservices is examined.CYCW-202Integration Seminar1 Credits (0:0:30 hours)Students discuss field placement experiences and apply theories,knowledge and skills from second year course work to their Child andYouth Care field placement practice. Students practice group work skillsin seminar sessions. Students explore the notion of “caring for thecaregiver,” designing and applying self-care strategies to themselves ashelping professionals.Prerequisites: CYCW 110 and CYCW 111. Co-requisites: CYCW 203.CYCW-203Field Placement4 Credits (0:0:240 hours)Students work in challenging child and youth care settings, with a focuson supporting youth and families to make effective change in theirlives. In group care, family-based, or specialized community programs,students demonstrate individual counselling, life-space teaching, activityprogramming, and crisis intervention, along with the core competenciesof relationship building, behaviour management, report writing andteam work.Prerequisites: CYCW 110 and CYCW 111. Co-requisites: CYCW 202.CYCW-204Group Work3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)Students explore the role of groups in the treatment process forchildren, youth and families in child and youth care contexts. Studentsextend individual counselling skills into group work practice in the lifespace. Students apply group facilitation skills in the classroom.Prerequisites: CYCW 114CYCW-205Issues in Family Work3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)Students are introduced to conceptual frameworks to assessdysfunctional family systems and understand contemporary issuesfacing today’s families. The perspective of family resilience is integratedwith family developmental theory as a conceptual map to guide familyintervention. Theoretical models of support programs and servicesavailable to families are also analyzed. Critical thinking is emphasizedin relation to entry-level competencies in child and youth care.Prerequisites: CYCW 112.CYCW-206Child/Youth Care Methods II3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)Students explore the process of altering the story about “self” which isheld by the child, youth, and his/her family through the applicationof therapeutic interventions such as cognitive behavioural therapyand attachment-focused interventions and use of expressive therapiesincluding creative journaling, music, play, drama, and bibliotherapy.There is a focus on aggressive youth and crisis intervention as well asthe ethical considerations for child and youth care practitioners.Prerequisites: CYCW 200.CYCW-207Integration Seminar1 Credits (0:0:30 hours)Students discuss field placement experiences and apply informationand skills from course work completed. In this fourth seminar, studentspractice advanced group work skills and also engage in essential jobsearch activities.Prerequisites: CYCW 202 and CYCW 203. Co-requisites: CYCW 208.CYCW-208Field Placement4 Credits (0:0:240 hours)Students practice required entry-level competencies of a child and youthcare worker. In group care, family-based or specialized communityprograms for youth and their families, the student demonstrates thecompetencies of service planning, implementation and evaluationwithin a service team.Prerequisites: CYCW 202 and CYCW 203. Co-requisites: CYCW 207.CYCW-209Family Support and Intervention2 Credits (30:0:0 hours)Family assessment and intervention skills required to work in the lifespace are a major focus of this course. Activity based and solutionfocusedfamily interventions are applied.Prerequisites: CYCW 205.CYCW-211Development Across the Lifespan3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)Students examine major developmental milestones and challengesacross the lifespan, beginning at conception and ending with death anddying. Students explore various theoretical perspectives, and relevantresearch at all developmental stages.
