Working in teams, students collaborate with an arts orcultural organization or artist of their choice to complete a project orspecial event of mutual interest. Drawing on the skills developed inprevious courses, students develop a project plan, execute the plan andevaluate the results.Prerequisites: AGAD 203AGAD-225Performing Arts Management3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)In this course students analyze the complexities of managing liveperforming arts including facility/operations management, front-ofhousemanagement, programming and touring. Students also describethe relationship with unions and associations, risk managementstrategies, technical terminology used in performance venues andemerging issues and trends in the performing arts.AGAD-226Museum/Gallery Management3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)In this course, students examine the functional role of museums, publicgalleries, commercial galleries and artist-run centres, and their variedorganizational structures. Students study issues and trends in collectionsmanagement and develop mandates, policies and procedures,programming and exhibition plans.AGAD-227Managing in the Music Industry3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)In this course students examine the complex role of the artist manager.Studies include an overview of the Canadian music industry, keycompetencies of the artist manager, contract terms and the legallanguage of agreements. Students also examine the manager’s role indeveloping the artist’s career, including recording and touring, and howto establish a career as a competent and ethical manager.AGAD-230Independent Study/Project3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)This course offers students the opportunity to write a major researchpaper, to manage a project for an arts or cultural organization or toundertake a project of interest during their final term of study. Beforebeginning a course of independent study, students are required consultwith the chair and to present a proposal, the estimated number ofhours required to complete the project or paper, a list of requiredresources and a detailed project evaluation plan.Prerequisites: AGAD 223.AGAD-231Field Placement5 Credits (0:0:280 hours)Students complete a full-time, eight-week supervised workplace learningexperience where they will apply and test their arts management skillsand knowledge. Students identify, interview and choose from a widerange of potential placements and work in a variety of arts managementfunctions including marketing, fund development, volunteer and/orevent management, publicity and general arts administration.Prerequisites: AGAD 122. Co-requisites: AGAD 233.AGAD-232Advanced Audience and Resource Development3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)In this course, students apply advanced techniques and strategies relatedto marketing and fund development in the cultural sector. Studentsresearch potential partnerships and prepare case statements and fundingproposals, leveraging benefits and shaping proposals to the needs andinterests of potential funders. Students also engage in audience researchto identify consumer trends and audience preferences and use thisinformation to prepare a comprehensive audience development plan.Prerequisites: AGAD 122AGAD-233Integration Seminar1 Credits (15:0:0 hours)Students discuss workplace learning experiences and reflect upon theirchallenges and accomplishments. Best practices and arts managementprinciples are revisited in the context of students’ real world fieldplacement assignments. The Integration Seminar is offered concurrentlywith Field Placement.Prerequisites: AGAD 223 and AGAD 232. Co-requisites: AGAD 231.ANTH-101Introduction to Anthropology3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)This course is a general introduction to anthropology through the studyof central concepts and key issues. These include human evolution, theappearance of culture, social organization, cultural theory, symbolicsystems, and culture change.ANTH-108Elements of Human Linguistics3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)This course provides an introduction to the principle ideas aboutlanguage and communication, including laboratory exercises.Course content includes human evolution, anatomy and languagedevelopment; design features and structural elements of language;language acquisition and writing systems.ANTH-110Gender, Age and Culture3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)A study of sex, gender and age distinctions from a biological, andcross-cultural perspective. We examine how societies organize sexualdifferences and what it means to be a man or a woman in differentcultures. The impact of sex or gender and age differences as crucialaspects of social organization, and the structure of daily life in humanspecies are considered.ANTH-150Race and Racism in the Modern World3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)This course gives an anthropological perspective on how the concept ofrace has been used to examine biological and cultural variation amonghumans. Issues and topics include multiculturalism, ethnic identity,prejudice and ethnocentrism, racism, eugenics and the persistenceof ethnic identity in the face of globalization.
