Theories, knowledge, current evidence and a diverse range ofskills are incorporated to promote health and healing and provideholistic nursing care of persons with alterations in health. Assessment,organization, priority setting and evaluation strategies are emphasizedto enhance patient/client care. Consultation with patient/client, family,and engagement with health professionals is incorporated.Prerequisites: Minimum grade of C- in HLSC 220, HLSC 222, NURS 252,NURS 270, and NURS 272.NURS-277Nursing Practice II Across the Lifespan5 Credits (10:0:143 hours)Students build on the knowledge and skills attained in NURS 275,including application of evidence to practice. The focus continues onpatients/clients experiencing chronic and/or stable acute alterationsin health. Critical thinking, problem solving and ethical reasoning arefurther developed for provision of safe, competent and ethical nursingcare. Collaboration with patients/clients, families and health careprofessionals is incorporated.Prerequisites: Minimum grade of C- in NURS 275.NURS-279Nursing Practice: Mental Health Nursing5 Credits (10:0:143 hours)Students plan, implement, coordinate and evaluate nursing care forpersons experiencing, or at risk for, chronic or acute alterations inmental health in a variety of settings. Nursing theories, knowledge,current evidence and a diverse range of skills are incorporated toprovide culturally sensitive, age-appropriate, evidence-informed nursingcare. Communication and assessment skills are used to recognizeand initiate early interventions to promote mental health, and toevaluate and intervene for persons with alterations in mental healthstatus. Collaboration with patients/clients, family, interdisciplinaryand intersectoral members is emphasized, including access and use ofcommunity health resources.Prerequisites: Minimum grade of C- in HLSC 220, HLSC 222, NURS 252,NURS 270 and NURS 272.NURS-344Fundamentals of Nursing Research3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)The focus of this course is on the fundamental concepts, methods,and processes of research in nursing and in health. Qualitative andquantitative approaches are introduced and discussed in relation tothe development of knowledge for nursing practice. Emphasis willbe placed on reading, understanding, and systematically evaluatingresearch to inform nursing practice. The ethical conduct of research willbe addressed.Prerequisites: Minimum grade of C- in NURS 277, NURS 279 and a 100or 200 level Statistics course.NURS-370Nursing Care of the Acutely Ill Across the Lifespan4 Credits (45:30:0 hours)Knowledge, skills and attributes are acquired and applied for evidenceinformednursing care with diverse individuals and families, who areexperiencing acute and complex alterations in health. Selected nursingtheories and models are used as a framework to guide nursing practiceand facilitate the promotion of health and healing from a populationhealth perspective. Management and alleviation of symptoms arediscussed with perspectives of body-mind-spirit related to alterationsin health across the lifespan. Integration of capacity building, healthassessment, effective communication, teaching/learning, collaborativedecision making, and critical thinking guide nursing practice.Discussions, practice scenarios, and simulations are utilized to enhancepriority setting and formulation of nursing interventions related to careof patients/clients experiencing acute and complex health alterations.Prerequisites: Minimum grade of C- in NURS 277 and NURS 279.Co-requisites: HLST 354.NURS-372Nursing Care of Families With Young Children4 Credits (45:30:0 hours)Knowledge, skills and attributes are acquired and applied forevidence-informed nursing care with families during preconception,pregnancy, labour, delivery, postpartum, and childrearing from birth toadolescence. Selected developmental and family theories, communityresources and population health perspectives/programs are integratedto promote health and facilitate family capacity. Trends and issues inchildbearing and childrearing are explored from multiple perspectives.Prerequisites: Minimum grade of C- in NURS 275, NURS 277 and NURS279. Prerequisites or Co-requisites: HLST 354.NURS-375Nursing Practice: Nursing Care of Acutely Ill Acrossthe Lifespan5 Credits (10:0:143 hours)Students integrate evidence-informed knowledge to guide nursingcare with individuals and families experiencing alterations in healthwithin acute care settings. Students promote health and healing, andrespond appropriately to alterations in health status. Integration ofdiverse skills, including health assessment, effective communication,teaching/learning strategies/principles, participatory decision making,and critical thinking, will guide nursing care. Utilization of reflectivepractice combined with organization and priority setting directs thestudent to provide safe, competent, and ethical nursing care. Studentsbecome increasingly self-directed in the provision of collaborative carewith the individual/family, intersectoral groups, and transdisciplinaryteam members.Prerequisites: Minimum grade of C- in NURS 370, NURS 372 andHLST 354.NURS-377Nursing Practice: Nursing in the Community5 Credits (10:0:143 hours)Students integrate knowledge and skills into the practice of communitynursing in a variety of settings. Students apply selected theories,knowledge, and current evidence while collaborating with individuals,families, groups/aggregates, and communities. Assessment, planning,and intervention strategies are utilized to promote individual andpopulation health.
