OAMS-110Medical Office Procedures I3 Credits (30:30:0 hours)Students explore the changing role of the medical office assistantwith emphasis on communication, telephone techniques, andmedical administrative procedures. Students investigate ethical andprofessional standards, current legislation and explore diversity within amedical environment.OAMS-111Office Technology and Skill Development I3 Credits (30:30:0 hours)Students create and manage electronic files and work with email.Students attain an intermediate level of competency in word processingand develop skills in formatting business documents using industrystandard software. Students attain a minimum speed of 35 wpm on afive-minute timing using a five-error cut-off.OAMS-112Customer Communications and Service3 Credits (30:30:0 hours)In preparation for success in the changing business world, thiscourse focuses on customer service, basic business correspondence,preparation for meetings, roles and responsibilities in meetings and jobsearch preparation.OAMS-113Medical Terminology I3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)Students analyze the language and terms used to refer to body systemsand the related pathology and medical procedures. Emphasis is placedon spelling and understanding terminology through word building.Students apply knowledge of medical terminology to read andunderstand medical reports.OAMS-114Pharmaceutical Terminology3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)This course is an introduction to basic pharmaceutical terminology.Students focus on the pharmaceutical terminology related to theiradministrative duties as medical office assistants and unit clerks.OAMS-120Medical Office Procedures II3 Credits (30:30:0 hours)This course focuses on appointment scheduling, medical billing usingspecialized software, and records management. Building on skillsdeveloped in Medical Office Procedures I, students practice moreadvanced medical office procedures. Students also investigate careeropportunities in their field.Prerequisites: Minimum grade of C- in OAMS 110.OAMS-121Office Technology and Skill Development II3 Credits (30:30:0 hours)Students work with spreadsheets, databases and other software packagesin the preparation of business documentation and presentations.Students attain a minimum speed of 45 wpm on a five-minute timedwriting using a five-error cut-off.Prerequisites: Minimum grade of C- in OAMS 111.OAMS-123Medical Terminology II3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)This course provides students with further knowledge of medicalterminology and the pathology and medical procedures related to eachbody system studied. Emphasis is placed on spelling and understandingterminology through word building. Students also apply knowledge ofmedical terminology to read and understand medical reports.Prerequisites: Minimum grade of C- in OAMS 113.OAMS-126Medical Transcription3 Credits (30:30:0 hours)In this course, students develop the skills and knowledge necessaryto accurately transcribe a variety of medical reports from audio.Students incorporate their knowledge of medical and pharmaceuticalterminology, medical abbreviations, and punctuation and grammar.Emphasis is placed on development of transcription speed andproofreading skills.Prerequisites: Minimum grade of C- in OAMS 113.OAMS-127Unit Clerk2 Credits (15:30:0 hours)This course prepares students to work as Health Unit Coordinators in ahospital or medical office setting. Students learn to transcribe doctors’orders, coordinate tasks in the nursing unit and support the manager invarious administrative tasks.Prerequisites: Minimum grade of C- in OAMS 113.OAMS-128Office Math Applications and Basic Bookkeeping2 Credits (15:30:0 hours)Students apply basic mathematical concepts in business applicationsincluding petty cash, expense claims, reconciliation, purchasing,discounts, payroll, and budgeting. In addition, students are introducedto types of businesses, sources of revenue, and GST determination.OAMS-130Medical Office Procedures III3 Credits (30:30:0 hours)This course focuses on practical experience in preparation for work in avariety of medical office environments. Students learn health and safetyregulations, infection control precautions, and first-aid techniquesnecessary to work in a clinical environment.
