The private teacher and the student select pieces fromstandard jazz and popular music repertoires for study. Students alsoprepare for a juried technical examination that is given at the endof term.Prerequisites: MUSC 132.MUSC-222Applied Instrument II1.5 Credits (0:5.25:0 hours)This course builds on the skills developed in Applied Music I. Secondyearstudents in the Composition and General routes continue toreceive bi-weekly forty-five minute private lessons on their majorapplied instrument, with focus on technique, repertoire developmentand style. The private teacher and the student select pieces fromstandard jazz and popular music repertoires for weekly study andexamination. Students complete a juried repertoire examination givenat the end of term at which they are assessed on presentation, technicalability, interpretation and stylistic aspects.Prerequisites: MUSC 221.MUSC-233Principal Instrument III3 Credits (0:10.5:0 hours)Principal Instrument III is the third in a series of four courses in whichstudents receive individual instruction in technique and its applicationto repertoire. The course consists of private lessons that primarilyprepare the student for two juried examinations: a technical/scale juryand a repertoire jury.MUSC-234Principal Instrument IV3 Credits (0:10.5:0 hours)Principal Instrument IV is the last course in a series of four coursesin which students receive individual instruction in technique and itsapplication to repertoire. The course consists of private lessons thatprimarily prepare students for two juried examinations: a technical/scalejury and the Graduation Recital.Prerequisites: MUSC 233MUSC-235Principal Instrument IV3 Credits (0:10.5:0 hours)In this course, Bachelor of Music Performance students continueprivate lessons on their major instrument with a focus on technique,style, repertoire development, and theoretical and aural skills. Studentsperform a technical jury at midterm and a repertoire jury at the end ofthe term.Prerequisites: MUSC 233.MUSC-243Ensemble III3 Credits (30:45:0 hours)Ensemble III is the third course in a series of four courses that developa wide variety of essential performance skills and abilities within anensemble environment. The Ensemble courses address style, repertoire,technique, reading, improvisation, performance, listening and otherensemble skills that are necessary for the professional jazz andcontemporary popular musician.MUSC-244Ensemble IV3 Credits (30:45:0 hours)Ensemble IV is the final course in the series of courses that developa wide variety of essential performance skills and abilities within anensemble environment. The Ensemble courses address style, repertoire,technique, reading, improvisation, performance, listening and otherensemble skills that are necessary for the professional jazz andcontemporary popular musician.Prerequisites: MUSC 243.MUSC-245General Ensemble III3 Credits (0:30:0 hours)In this workshop-style course, the students select appropriate repertoireand develop relevant performance skills, rehearsal techniques, arrangingtechniques and leadership ability within a collaborative environment.Students also receive private lessons.MUSC-246General Ensemble IV3 Credits (0:30:0 hours)The course is a continuation of General Ensemble III. Students selectappropriate repertoire and develop relevant performance skills,rehearsal techniques, arranging techniques and leadership ability withina collaborative environment. Students also receive private lessons. Theterm work culminates in a public performance.Prerequisites: MUSC 245.MUSC-247Intro to Contemporary Issues in Performance andPractice Techniques3 Credits (15:45:0 hours)This course provides a master-class environment in which studentsdevelop a variety of performance skills and acquire the various toolsnecessary to function in jazz and contemporary ensembles. Studentsundertake several ensemble-related projects and prepare repertoire forrecital. Topics include style, repertoire, interpretation of recordings,scores and lead sheets, ensemble rehearsal techniques, reading andmusic direction.Prerequisites: MUSC 243MUSC-251Studio Recording Techniques3 Credits (30:30:0 hours)This course concentrates on all aspects of recording studio engineering.Topics include the behaviour of sound, acoustics, recording studiodesign, analog and digital audio, and the theory and operation ofrecording studio equipment.
