Psychiatric Nursing • Psychiatric Nursing • Psychiatric Nursing • Psychiatric Nursing • Psychiatric Nursing • Psychiatric Nursinginstitutional graduation regulationsMacEwan University has institutional graduation regulationsfor Ministry approved programs.Institutional regulations are those that each studentmust fulfil in order to be eligible to receive a MacEwanUniversity credential.Details are available in the university’s Graduation PolicyC2100 and other relevant policies as noted below.<strong>Academic</strong> Residency – A student must complete atleast 50 per cent of courses through MacEwan University.Challenge examinations, transfer credit and other specialassessments (for example, prior learning and recognition) arenot included in the 50 per cent (C1015 <strong>Academic</strong> Residency).<strong>Academic</strong> Standing – A student must obtain a minimum2.00 <strong>Academic</strong> Standing GPA to be considered in GoodStanding (C2070 <strong>Academic</strong> Standing).Attendance – A student must comply with any courseor program attendance and punctuality requirements asnoted on course outlines or in program handbooks (C2050Attendance). In addition, sponsored students may havespecial attendance requirements.Graduation Grade Point Average – A minimumGraduation Grade Point Average (GGPA) of 2.00 on the 4.00scale is required.Minimum Course Grade – Some programs may requirethe achievement of a specific grade in a course for graduationpurposes. For specific course grade requirements, please referto your Program of Study.Minimum Transfer Grade – A minimum course transfergrade of D is required except when a higher grade is specifiedas a program requirement for graduation – see “MinimumCourse Grade” (C2030 Inter-Institutional Transferability).Non-duplicative Coursework – Each course completed forcredit or for which transfer credit is granted may be used onlyonce for credit towards fulfilling any program requirement.Prerequisites/Co-requisites – Each student is responsiblefor fulfilling each course prerequisite or co-requisite aslisted in the course description (E3101 Student Rights andResponsibilities).Program Time Limits – A student in Psychiatric Nursinghas four years from the first day of the term of acceptanceto complete all requirements to be eligible for a credential(C2075 Program Time Limits).Repeating Credit Courses (Policy is under review andsubject to change) – A student in a credit course shallbe allowed to repeat any course one additional time,regardless of whether the initial registration resulted in afailing or passing grade (C1035 Repeating Credit Courses).Course Withdrawals (W) and Audits (AU) do not count ascourse attempts.Required English Course – A student in a Ministryapproved program shall take an English course as specified inthe Program of Study (C1030 Required English Course).program graduation regulationsProgression of Studies – Students are responsible forensuring they meet the prerequisite and/or co-requisiterequirements as noted on program courses. Courseregistration is required for attendance in all program courses.Professional Code of Conduct – Students must adhereto the Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Canada (RPNC)code of ethics, the professional code of conduct and theconfidentiality agreements signed with MacEwan Universityand clinical placement/other agencies.Regulations Governing Clinical Courses – Students mustachieve satisfactory performance in all clinical courses inaccordance with the course/clinical criteria. Clinical coursehours may include days, evenings, nights and weekends.Students are to arrange their own transportation for requiredprogram activities and any costs incurred for meals, travel andaccommodation are the student’s responsibility. Students willrequire daily access to a vehicle for any practice experiencenot accessible through public transportation. Requirednursing practice placements will generally be within a 150kilometre radius of the program site.Students cannot be in attendance at clinical agencies asa MacEwan University psychiatric nursing student exceptat times and locations authorized by the clinical courseinstructor for the course in which the student is currentlyenrolled. Students must comply with Policy C2060 WorkIntegrated Learning regarding clinical and/or nursingpractice placements.Security Clearance – A current, clear security clearance forworking with vulnerable populations is required for programadmission. This check must be completed no earlier thanfour months prior to the program start date and submittedno later than the academic document deadline. Having apardon in progress does not meet the admission requirementfor a clear security clearance.Students are responsible for obtaining security clearancechecks at intervals specified by clinical agencies and formaking these available, upon request, to their clinical agencyrepresentative. Students may also be required to obtain childwelfare checks for some clinical placements. Students mustbe able to satisfy agency requirements prior to the start ofclinical placements. Students whose security clearance statuschanges following program admission compromise theirability to complete the program requirements as they may bedenied required clinical placements and, therefore, be unableto meet graduation requirements.Program Standards – In accordance with MacEwanUniversity’s Admissions policy (C5010) students admitted tothe Psychiatric Nursing program are presumed to be capableof fulfilling the academic requirements of their programwith, if applicable, provision of reasonable accommodation.The reasonable accommodation of students with disabilitiesshall not require MacEwan University to lower its standards,academic or otherwise, nor shall it relieve a student of theresponsibility to develop and demonstrate the essential skillsand competencies expected of all students pursuing thisprogram (Policy E3400, Students with Disabilities).Immunization Status – Program students may be requiredto care for patients who have infectious diseases such asHepatitis B and those with other blood-borne pathogenswhen assigned to their care.
