As a basis for forming healthy and satisfyingrelationships, students engage in activities to increase their selfawarenessand their understanding of non-verbal communication. Theypractice listening and sending skills, then apply these skills in helpingrelationships, and to resolve conflict. To equip students to live and workin a diverse environment, particular attention is given to the impact ofculture in communication and relationships.INTD-130Cross Media Studies3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)This course examines how literary themes and techniques areadapted into various genres and media. The works studied dependin any given year upon the interests and expertise of the instructor.The course may focus on a specific genre and then examine crossmedia works from within that genre, for example, film and prose inscience fiction, or cinematic adaptations of the theatrical works ofShakespeare. Alternatively, the course could focus on a single mediumthat incorporates aesthetic elements from other media, such as graphicnovels or hypertext fiction.JAPN-101Introductory Japanese I3 Credits (75:0:0 hours)This is an introductory course for students with little or no backgroundin Japanese or whose native language is not Japanese. The four languageskills of oral/aural comprehension, speaking, as well as basic readingand writing are emphasized. In addition, students are acquaintedwith some aspects of Japanese culture. Note: Students with native ornear-native proficiency cannot take this course. Heritage speakers mustconsult the department prior to registration. Students with a proficiencylevel beyond this course may be directed to a higher-level course.Students with credit in Japanese 30, 35, or equivalent cannot receivecredit for this course.JAPN-102Introductory Japanese II3 Credits (75:0:0 hours)This course is a continuation of JAPN 101. Students continue to acquirefurther oral/aural comprehension skills in introductory Japanese, andcontinue to develop reading and writing skills of approximately 100Kanji. In addition, students develop their understanding of variousaspects of Japanese culture. Note: Students with native or near-nativeproficiency cannot take this course. Heritage speakers must consultthe department prior to registration. Students with a proficiency levelbeyond this course may be directed to a higher-level course. Studentswith credit in Japanese 30, 35, or equivalent cannot receive credit forthis course.Prerequisites: Minimum grade of C- in JAPN 101JAPN-201Introductory Japanese III3 Credits (75:0:0 hours)This course is designed for students who have completed JAPN 102,JAPN 150 or equivalent and who wish to develop further their oral/aural comprehension skills at the intermediate level of Japanese, as wellas continue to develop reading and writing skills of approximately 150Kanji. In addition, students continue to improve their understandingof various aspects of Japanese culture. Note: Students with nativeproficiency cannot take this course. Heritage speakers must consultthe department prior to registration. Students with a proficiency levelbeyond this course may be directed to a higher-level course.Prerequisites: Minimum grade of C- in JAPN 102 or JAPN 150.JAPN-202Introductory Japanese IV3 Credits (75:0:0 hours)This course is a continuation of Japanese 201. Students continue togain fluency in oral/aural comprehension at the intermediate levelof Japanese, and continue to develop reading and writing skills ofapproximately 150 Kanji. In addition, students continue to improvetheir understanding of various aspects of Japanese culture. Note:Students with native proficiency cannot take this course. Studentswith a proficiency level beyond this course may be directed to ahigher-level course.Prerequisites: Minimum grade of C- in JAPN 201.LATN-101Introductory Latin I3 Credits (75:0:0 hours)This is an introductory course for students with little or no backgroundin Latin. It includes the study of the fundamental grammaticalstructures and vocabulary of Classical Latin so that students may readand understand simple Latin texts. Note: This course is not open tostudents with credit in Latin 30, 35, or any other matriculation levelLatin course. A minimum grade of C- for this course is a prerequisite forLatin 102 and for university transfer.LATN-102Introductory Latin II3 Credits (75:0:0 hours)This course is a continuation of Introductory Latin I. Students continueto study the elements of Classical Latin grammar and syntax, to acquireadditional vocabulary and to read increasingly difficult Classical Latintexts. Note: This course is not open to students with credit in Latin30, 35, or any other matriculation level Latin course.
