Visual imagery conveys messages inmemorable, momentous and moving ways. The DesignStudies program provides students with the capabilityto transform ideas and concepts into powerful visualcommunication that effectively delivers a message.DESIGN FOUNDATIONS CERTIFICATEThe Design Foundations Certificate is where students begintheir path toward a career in visual communication design.This first year is dedicated to obtaining a solid foundation invisual language in both two- and three-dimensional design.Students explore design principles and processes as well asthe meaning and significance of visual imagery. They alsodevelop drawing and rendering skills and learn about thehistorical and contemporary cultural context of design.DIPLOMA STUDIESUpon successful completion of the Design FoundationsCertificate, students can enter into one of three majors andearn a diploma in:• Design and Digital Media• Design and Illustration• Design and PhotographyIn Diploma Studies, students in each of the three majorslearn a common set of visual communication design skillsessential to academic and professional success: drawingand composition, typography and page assembly, creativeprocess, and the application of professional standards. Inthe MacEwan University Design Studies program, emphasisis placed on the development of creative, conceptual andvisual design skills, but students also learn technology andproduction methods. As studies progress, students continueto build design skills and creative approaches, and produceportfolios that are specific to each major. Options withinDesign Studies also provide students the opportunity toexplore beyond their chosen discipline.Design and Digital MediaDesign and Digital Media graduates are specialists in visualcommunication that appears on the screen. In this major, anemphasis is placed on interface design, website developmentand the processes involved in taking a project from idea tocompletion. Students develop general design skills throughthe study of drawing, composition, page layout and assembly,and typography in a hands-on studio environment. Studentsapply skills to a wide range of communication media,with an emphasis on web design and delivery. Studentscomplete the program with an impressive portfolio thatdemonstrates a thorough understanding of design and theskills required to create engaging experiences using currentdigital media technology.Design and IllustrationDesign and Illustration graduates are specialists in visualcommunication that appears on the printed page. Inthis major, an emphasis is placed on publication design,corporate identity and logo design, advertising andpromotion, and hand-drawn illustration. Students honevisual communication design skills through practical handsonstudio projects. Learning about the technical demandsof design, students explore interface design and delivery,printing processes and the production of press-ready digitalfiles. Students complete the program with an impressiveportfolio that demonstrates a well-rounded education inprint design and the skills required to create engaging visualcommunication design.Design and PhotographyDesign and Photography graduates are specialists atproducing visual communications that are captured withthe click of a shutter. In this major, an emphasis is placedon mastering composition, lighting, printing, cameraequipment, and learning various styles of photographysuch as portraiture, documentary, editorial and advertising.Students also apply their photographic skills in the contextfor which they will be used through the study of generaldesign principles, page layout, typography and interfacedesign. Students complete the program with an impressiveportfolio that demonstrates excellence as a photographer andproficiency as a visual communication designer.Career potentialUpon graduation students find work in large agencies, smallstudios, print shops, and communications departmentsin medium-sized businesses up to large corporations.Depending on the major, a graduate’s responsibilitiesmight include interface design, merchandising, illustration,point-of-purchase design, magazine layout, advertising,promotional, photography, display design, websitedevelopment and electronic pre-press production. Manygraduates from Design Studies also succeed at starting theirown freelance design or photography studios.TRANSFERABILITYAll courses completed for the Design Foundations certificateand the Design Studies diploma are credit courses and maytransfer individually toward further study at other Albertainstitutions. Students interested in transferring courses areadvised to consult both the receiving institution regardingtransfer policies and the MacEwan University Design Studiesprogram regarding coursework and portfolio development.Like the Design Studies program at MacEwan University,other institutions typically base transfer on both theapplication of creative skills as demonstrated in an entranceportfolio and on an assessment of course content.Students presenting a completed Design Foundationscertificate or a Design Studies (Photography Major)diploma are eligible to apply for admission and beeligible for a block transfer to ACAD (Alberta College ofArt and Design).
