Students apply contractprinciples to the employment relationship from both employer andemployee perspectives to achieve equitable employment relations.Legislation examined includes labour standards, human rights andprivacy. This course does not discuss unionized workplaces.LEGL-215Commercial Transactions3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)Students learn law office procedures and documents for six essentialcommercial transactions from opening to closing of file: a commerciallease, a commercial mortgage, the purchase and sale of commercialland, the purchase of commercial personal property, the purchase ofshares of a corporation and the purchase of assets of a business. Theyalso master the principles of Alberta’s Personal Property Registry systemand learn how to interpret PPR search results.Prerequisites: LEGL 130 and LEGL 150.LEGL-220Criminal Law Procedures3 Credits (30:30:0 hours)Students are introduced to substantive law as well as the procedures forcriminal law in Canada.LEGL-230Civil Litigation Procedures II3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)Students review selected topics in the litigation process such aspersonal injury actions, settlement, experts, and civil appeals. Studentsbegin with a discussion of automobile litigation and car insurance.Students explore alternatives to the litigation process. The emphasisis on document production in conformity with the Rules andPractice Directives.Prerequisites: LEGL 160.LEGL-240Technology in the Law Office II3 Credits (30:30:0 hours)Students increase proficiency with word processing software commonlyused in legal settings and with machine transcription. Students developproficiency in using other commonly used software including databaseand spreadsheet programs.Prerequisites: LEGL 170.LEGL-260Credit and Collection Procedures3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)Students learn practical aspects of creditors’ rights, including relevantstatute law. The emphasis is on provincial legislation and proceduralrules relating to the bringing of a simple debt action and the variousmeans of enforcing a judgment. Realizing on various security interests isalso reviewed.Prerequisites: LEGL 160 and LEGL 215.LEGL-270Estate Procedures3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)Students learn which assets form part of the estate of a deceased andwhich do not. They explore the intricacies of the law governing peoplewho die without a will. They learn about Alberta’s laws governingsubstitute decision-making and the relevant documents available. Theylearn basics of the law of wills and how to take instructions for andprepare a will for signature. Finally, they learn the law and proceduresfor two key court applications: application for probate and applicationfor a dependent adult order, and they prepare those documents.LEGL-280Family Law Procedures3 Credits (30:30:0 hours)Students learn the substantive and procedural law relating to family lawmatters, including divorce actions, family law chambers applicationsand desk divorce applications. Students complete a mock file, withemphasis on document production in conformity with the Rules andPractice Directives.LEGL-290Law Office Simulation3 Credits (30:30:0 hours)Students prepare mock files independently in various areas of law in asimulated office setting. Students are expected to prioritize and organizeworkloads while demonstrating the professionalism required of staff ina legal office.Prerequisites: LEGL 130, LEGL 150, LEGL 170, LEGL 220, LEGL 230, orconsent of the program. Prerequisites or Co-requisites: LEGL 270, LEGL280, or consent of the program.LEGL-295Legal Fieldwork3 Credits (0:0:180 hours)Students gain practical law office experience over a five-week period byobserving the work and responsibilities of legal assistants working in alaw office. Students participate in the operation of a law office, workingas student interns under the supervision of lawyers and legal assistants.Prerequisites: LEGL 110, 140,180, 210, 220, 230, 240 or consent ofthe program.LEGL-310International Business Transactions3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)Students are introduced to the principles of international law with anemphasis on international business transactions such as importing,exporting, (direct and indirect), and export transaction costs andelectronic commerce. In addition, students apply principles ofethics to international commerce. Students discuss and evaluateinternational commodity, capital, and knowledge markets and theglobal and transnational forces that are shaping the management ofenterprises and organizations.
