Emergency communicators are thecritical link between the public and those who provide police,fire and emergency medical assistance. As the field evolves,the need for highly skilled and knowledgeable professionalsis critical. The field demands professionals who are able tomulti-task, use high-tech equipment, think critically andquickly in a stressful setting, and respond to the challenges ofthe field.The Emergency Communications and Response programdevelops the broad knowledge and skills required of callevaluators or dispatchers and the unique knowledge andskills in police, fire and emergency medical environments.The program is a full-time, eight-month certificate programwith some options for part-time study (contact the program).Full-time program entry occurs each fall. The full-timeprogram may be offered as a combination of day andevening courses. The students participate in a short fieldplacement with a communication centre in the final monthof the program.Career potentialChallenging and rewarding careers as call evaluatorsor dispatchers can be found in police, fire or medicalcommunications centres. Positions can be found withprovincial, federal or municipal police, fire or emergencymedical services. Many opportunities are also available inspecialized public or private communication centres dealingwith priority service requests.TRANSFERABILITYUp to five courses can be applied to meet the requirements inthe Police Studies or Investigative Studies majors in the Policeand Investigations diploma program at MacEwan University.Categories of AdmissionApplicants may be admitted to the following:Regular AdmissionTo be evaluated through the Office of the RegistrarApplicants must have an Alberta high school diploma (orequivalent) or GED diploma.ADDITIONAL ADMISSION CRITERIAAll applicants must meet the following:1. Skills AppraisalTo be evaluated through the Office of the RegistrarApplicable to all admission categories• Unless otherwise specified, identified Skills Appraisalrequirements must be completed by the beginning of theintake term.Applicants must complete the Skills Appraisal only if they donot present ELA 30-1 with a minimum grade of 65 per centor ELA 30-2 with a minimum grade of 75 per cent.Writing: Applicants must successfully complete the writingportion AND be eligible to enter ENGL 111 OR complete anydevelopmental course work with a minimum grade of C-.Reading: Applicants must successfully complete the readingportion OR complete any developmental course work with aminimum grade of C-.1. English Language ProficiencyTo be evaluated through the Office of the RegistrarApplicable to all admission categoriesAll applicants must meet an acceptable level of Englishlanguage proficiency.
