ACUP-311Acupuncture Safety Course (Clean Needle Technique)1 Credits (15:0:0 hours)This course teaches how to efficiently apply Alberta standards andinternational standards for hygienic acupuncture practice, usingcommon sense approaches for the use of the acupuncture modalitiesthat will protect both patients and practitioners.ACUP-312Herbology for Acupuncturists2 Credits (30:0:0 hours)This course covers the basic principles of Chinese herbology andincludes the study of herbs and herbal formulas, commonly prescribedto patients who visit an acupuncture clinic. The information about theherbal products is presented at an introductory level providing practicalinformation that is essential to the acupuncturist.Prerequisites: ACUP 119.AGAD-100Foundations of Arts and Cultural Management3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)In this course students examine critical issues and trends facing culturalmanagers today. Students examine the breadth and diversity of thesector, various organizing models and methods, the contributionsof the sector to the Canadian economy and the role of art andculture in society. Students also examine significant historical eventsthat influenced the development of the arts in Canada and explorethe challenges inherent in balancing the needs of funders, artistsand patrons.AGAD-105Accounting for Arts and Cultural Managers3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)In this course, students prepare, record and interpret financialinformation used in decision making. Students practice accountingprocedures, prepare statements and reports for analysis and examinedifferences in the accounting practices of not-for-profit, charitable andfor-profit arts and cultural organizations.AGAD-107Computer Applications in Arts Management3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)Students develop foundational skills in the business applicationscommonly used by the arts manager including the features, functionsand efficiencies of spreadsheet, database, word processing, publishingand presentation software. Producing a range of managementdocuments, students focus on readability, visual appeal, form andfunction, and file management in each application. Projects combineskill development with the ability to connect these applications tosubsequent work in the program.AGAD-109Publicity and Media Relations in the Arts3 Credits (30:15:0 hours)In this course, students investigate the importance of publicity andmedia relations in the arts and cultural sector . Students research,write and edit media tools including media releases, public serviceannouncements, media kits, photo call/op notices and mediainvitations. They also prepare and plan media strategies includingmedia events, media lists, angles and pitches and develop a publicitycampaign with a focus on building relationships with audiences viathe media.AGAD-112Introduction to Audience and Resource Development3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)Students explore principles of marketing and fundraising whileexamining how these concepts are used to shape communications andresource development in the cultural sector. Students explore methodsof relationship building with audiences, including individuals andorganizations, for a variety of resource development goals focusing onearned and contributed revenue.AGAD-120Managing and Leading in Arts and Culture3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)In this course, students study the principles of management and discussthe complexities of leading in the cultural sector. Students examine andreflect on the influences of personality type, perception, motivation andstress on interpersonal effectiveness and the impact of power, politics,change and organizational culture on the organization.Prerequisites: AGAD 100.AGAD-122Applied Audience and Resource Development3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)In this course, students integrate and apply the principles of audienceand resource development to marketing and fund developmentcampaigns. Students develop key messages and plan for thedevelopment of marketing and fundraising materials in various formatsand media for a variety of audiences.Prerequisites: AGAD 112.AGAD-123Human Resources in Arts and Cultural Management3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)In this course, students examine the differing roles of boards ofdirectors, volunteers and paid personnel in relation to the skills andcompetencies of an arts manager. Emphasis is placed on the governancefunction of the board, and on the processes of recruitment, supervision,motivation, and evaluation for all three stakeholder groups.AGAD-201Advocacy in the Cultural Sector3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)The focus of this course is on developing the knowledge and skillsnecessary to become a successful advocate in the arts and culturalsector. Students study federal, provincial and municipal cultural policiesand government structures relevant to arts organizations, conduct policyrelated research and construct persuasive arguments and campaignsin support of the arts. Trends and emerging issues affecting arts andculture are also examined.Prerequisites: AGAD 100AGAD-203Project Management in Arts and Culture3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)In this course, students develop practical strategies for project planningacross a range of arts and cultural contexts.
