MTST-162Clinical Practice II1 Credits (0:0:45 hours)This course builds on the practical experience gained in clinical practiceI. In a supervised setting, students focus on providing massage therapytreatments to a variety of clients. This course offers an opportunity topractice advance techniques, alternate positioning and sequencing,introductory assessment procedures, charting skills, treatment plandevelopment and prescribing basic self-care.Prerequisites: Minimum grade of C- in MTST 161 and MTST 142.MTST-224Techniques IV3 Credits (30:30:30 hours)This course addresses therapeutic exercise, proprioceptiveneuromuscular facilitation (PNF), static stretching and advancedmyofascial release techniques. An in-depth understanding of thecontraindications and indications of these techniques is explored.Techniques are practiced in the context of treatment planning withan understanding of appropriate application of these techniques in aclinical setting. Client homecare programs are also developed.Prerequisites: MTST 143.MTST-225Techniques V3 Credits (30:30:30 hours)This course examines the principles, assessment and techniquesinvolved in the application of muscle energy techniques, muscleapproximation, golgi tendon organ releases as well as mobilizationsfor the spine and pelvis. Students develop and utilize these skills in atreatment based context.Prerequisites: MTST 224MTST-226Techniques VI3 Credits (30:30:30 hours)This course examines the theory, procedures and techniques forperipheral joint mobilizations. Students refine their palpation skills tosafely mobilize the specific structure involved. Peripheral mobilizationsare combined with other advanced treatment modalities.Prerequisites: MTST 225 and MTST 283.MTST-260Clinical Practice III1 Credits (0:0:45 hours)This course involves the application of advanced massage therapy toclients in a supervised setting. The intent is to build on the practicalexperience and knowledge gained in clinical practice II. This courseprovides an opportunity to practice advanced techniques on a varietyof clinical pathologies and special populations commonly seenby massage therapists. A focus is placed on advanced assessment,treatment planning, application of specialized techniques, and self-carecustomized to individual clients.Prerequisites: Minimum grade of C- in MTST 162, MTST 155 andMTST 143.MTST-261Clinical Practice IV1 Credits (0:0:45 hours)This course is the supervised application of therapeutic massagetechniques to clients in a clinic setting. Case conferences are conductedat which time students present assessment data treatment plans forindividual clients.Prerequisites: MTST 156, MTST 260, MTST 273, MTST 281, and StandardFirst Aid and Health Care Provider Level C CPR.MTST-262Clinical Practice V1 Credits (0:0:45 hours)This course is the final clinical experience in the massage therapyprogram. The focus of this course is on the application of therapeuticmassage techniques to clients with special needs in a supervised clinicalsetting. Students have the opportunity to develop skills working as partof a health care team through an internship in a hospital setting. Caseconferences are conducted at which time students present assessmentdata and treatment plans for individual clients.Prerequisites: MTST 283, MTST 261,MTST 274, MTST 225 and StandardFirst Aid and Health Care Provider Level C CPR.MTST-265Business Management for Massage Therapists2 Credits (30:0:0 hours)This course provides an introduction to setting up and maintaininga personal service business. Basic principles of business managementare explored. From an entrepreneurial view, marketing and servicepromotion are emphasized. Application to massage therapy practice inmarket analysis and selection are addressed.MTST-273Massage Therapy for Special Populations I2 Credits (25:20:0 hours)This course teaches therapeutic massage techniques for healthypopulations of clients throughout the life span. The areas ofconsideration include pre- and post-natal, perimenopausal, geriatric, aswell as neo-natal and young clients. Breast massage is also addressed.Prerequisites: MTST 161. Prerequisites or Co-requisites: MTST 140.MTST-274Massage Therapy for Special Populations II2 Credits (25:20:0 hours)This course examines the application of therapeutic massage of clientswith special needs. The areas considered include psychiatric, chroniclong term and deteriorating conditions, severe trauma and palliativecare. Prerequisites: MTST 273. Co-requisites: HLST 150 and MTST 240.MTST-281Treatments and Planning I2 Credits (30:15:0 hours)This course examines the principles for planning ongoing treatment forclients with various needs. Simulation and case studies are used for labtype practice. Prerequisites: MTST 273, HLST 150, MTST 156.
