Through the use of various drawing media, markmakingand techniques, students explore the representation of varyingbody forms.Prerequisites: VCOM 220.VCDR-231Modeling Preparation3 Credits (15:45:0 hours)This course introduces students to the basic principles and techniquesof modeling. Students begin with observational drawing exercises andprogress to developing three dimensional figure models. Althoughdetailed study of the human form is the primary focus, students are alsochallenged creatively through conceptual modeling exercises.VCDR-343Illustration Techniques3 Credits (15:45:0 hours)Students experiment with a wide range of media and stylistic technique. As students focus on developing illustration concept they improvetechnically and build an expressive illustration vocabulary.Prerequisites: VCDR 230VCDR-344Interpretive Drawing3 Credits (15:45:0 hours)Aiming for advanced technique and sophistication in form and style, students explore relationships between subject matter and interpretiveillustration. Complex concepts are planned and executed with particularattention to message and communicative values in the illustration.Students create several original compositions as they exploreexaggeration, distortion of perspective, stylization and mark-making.Prerequisites: VCDR 230.VCDR-353Interpretive Illustration3 Credits (15:45:0 hours)Students explore the communication possibilities of illustration. Givenseveral conceptual frameworks to guide their approach to the selectionof subject matter, technique, drawing, and colour composition, studentsproduce several original illustrations. The goals are mature design ideasand sophisticated technique.Prerequisites: VCDR 343 and VCDR 344.VCDR-380Concept Rendering3 Credits (15:45:0 hours)A crucial part of the design process is the presentation of a designer’sideas. Creative ideas evolve with discussion and contributions fromthe client and other designers. The focus of this course is to render aconcept through shape and form so that a creative idea can be sharedwith others.VCDR-382Digital Illustration3 Credits (30:30:0 hours)Students develop the skills to analyze, interpret and convey messagesusing digital techniques as the primary illustration medium. Projectsfocus on the creation of original vector and raster-based illustrations.Through the planning of illustrative projects, students make deliberatedecisions on software applications, stylization and technical approachesto subject matter and message.Prerequisites: VCOM 221 or VCMI 221, and VCOM 224 or VCMI 224.VCMI-322Advanced Production3 Credits (15:60:0 hours)Working as a team, students advance and refine production skillsas they work on complex and difficult production projects. Guidedby readings and loosely directed by a faculty advisor, students formas a crew, take on senior-level duties and execute a pre-productionplan into a polished product. Professional-quality standards areexpected in the finished production. Students critique their role andcontribution, provide constructive feedback to peers and reflect on theproduction process.Prerequisites: VCMI 213, VCMI 225.VCMI-380Introductory Video Production3 Credits (30:30:0 hours)This course introduces the process of video production. In a hands-onlearning environment, students use a video camcorder, record motionsegments according to a script and edit video segments. Studentsexplore how sound and visual editing techniques affect perceptionand meaning. Emphasis is placed on the communicative possibilitiesachieved through the editing process.VCMI-385Dynamic Media Delivery3 Credits (45:0:0 hours)In this course, students are introduced to a variety of alternative digitalaudio and video delivery mediums including CD-ROM, DVD-Video,and the Internet. Topics covered include medium specific constraints, interface design, re-sampling, and compression of audio and video fordigital delivery.VCOM-151Design Concept and Process3 Credits (45:30:0 hours)In this course, students are exposed to different facets of design as aprofession, and the role of the designer. Students learn to focus onthe audience when tackling a design problem. Also, students learndifferent techniques for the creation of concepts, while paying attentionto the communicative value of their solutions. Through research, roleplaying, and hands-on exercises, students begin to explore the designprocess while planning, executing and articulating creative solutions todesign problems.392Grant MacEwan University • A C A D E m I CRefer to the Online Alberta Transfer Guide at www.transferalberta.ca for transfer opportunitiesC A L E N D A R 2012/2013 • www.MacEwan.ca
