The vehicles used for the trial havebeen made available for over 1,000people to experience EV technologyfirst-hand through a short test-drive.The largest test-drive opportunitieshave been the 2010 and 2011 RACVGreenzone events, the 2011 AustralianInternational Motor Show and the 2012LEV Automotive Partnership FleetForum and Drive-day. The attractionof new technology has been clearlyevident throughout, with the electricvehicles being the most popularchoice in terms of test-drives taken ateach event. In addition to the resultsfrom participant surveys presentedin Section 4.2.2, key success factorsrelating to the event delivery included:• Involvement of an event organiserwith experience in deliveringvehicle test-drive events• Partnerships with the carmanufacturers, whoprovide funding supportand staff resources• An online test-drive bookingfacility to maximise vehicleutilisation and streamline theparticipant experience• Comprehensive vehicle insuranceto cover the test-drive activitycoupled with participant licencechecking and consent forms• Dedicated event staff includingfor bookings and to provideone-on-one instruction/supervision for the test-drives• Printed collateral to provideparticipants with moreinformation/sign-postingto online resources• Participant surveys to gaugeperceptions before/after thetest-drive experience (includingadvance consideration and on-thegroundverification of the surveydelivery arrangements).Test-drives have also been possiblethrough a car-share facility. As atest-drive option, car-share hassignificant advantages over theformal events described above interms of cost (funding and staff) andaccess for participants. This optionwas investigated in partnership withPlaces Victoria, ChargePoint andGoGet, through placement of a trial EVin a car-share facility located at TheNicholson residential development.While complications arising from theoperating environment have limitedand ultimately curtailed the car-sharefacility at this location, insights gainedfrom the initial roll-out are informingthe design of other electric car-shareroll-outs elsewhere.The Victorian Electric Vehicle TrialThe Victorian Government’s Electric Vehicle Trialaims to smooth our move towards electric vehicletechnologies. EV PROMOTION CASE STUDYELECTRIC CAR-SHARECar-share is a fast-growing alternative to vehicle ownership where members have access to a fleet ofvehicles in a network of locations and typically pay per use (Shaheen et al 2010). In Australia and aroundthe world, car-sharing is gaining popularity as a means to reduce transport costs, traffic congestion andimpacts on the environment (SGS 2012).Electric vehicles are a potentially great fit with car-share. The vehicles can be charged where they park,rather than needing to be refuelled at a service station. The majority of car-share journeys are well withinthe range of an electric vehicle – GoGet (2011) reported 97 per cent of trips made by their members asbeing less than 50 kilometres.Car-sharing also provides a means for the wider community to experience electric vehicle technologyfirst-hand. Users can choose when and where they take a test-drive, potentially to a location which haspriority parking for electric vehicles.GoGet joined the Victorian Electric Vehicle Trial in 2011, and have since deployed three electric car-shareservices in contrasting locations. Insights gained to date suggest that similar issues and opportunitiesexist for electric car-share deployment as for fleet EV take-up more broadly (refer to Section 4.3.4).Figure 58.
