The strengths and weaknesses of theproject would have been exposed to critics and possibly even to representativesof the potential funding organization.The final formulation of the proposal is tackled with the greatest possible care.It is necessary to present a well-considered exposition that is scientificallyjustifiable, and which also presents a clear picture of the scope of the projectand the manner in which it is to be conducted. Those reading and evaluatingthe proposal must be in a position where they will be able to gain an overallimpression: The rationale of the project appears to be in order; it would alsoappear to be possible to conduct the project, it appears likely that the results ofthe project will be worthwhile, and, in general, the project appears to be incapable hands.Free download from www.hsrcpress.ac.zaFORM AND CONTENT OF RESEARCH PROPOSALSThere are no absolute rules as far as the form and content of a researchproposal are concerned. The nature of the material that is included and themost effective and appropriate information to present, always depends upon thenature of the project and the attitude of the funding organization.As far as the sub-sections of the proposal are concerned, it is however, possibleto refer to certain issues that are usually dealt with in such proposals Whateverthe specific labels may be that are given to the sub-section, the main aim is toanswer the following eight questions adequately:What do you wish to do?Why do you wish to do it?How do you intend to do it?Who are you going to involve in getting it done?Where are you going to do it?What is your time schedule like?How much will it cost and how do you intend using the money?What fundamental contribution is likely to be made by the project?In the application form for a research grant or in the accompanying informationsheet that is provided, one often finds that sub-sections such as the followingare mentioned, and that they have to be included in the research proposal:(i) a brief introduction in which the general aim of the research is indicated,as well as the importance of the project conducted by the specificresearchers with his or her experience, is indicated;(ii) specific aims in the project and an indication of possible researchhypotheses or central theoretical arguments or theses that will guide theinvestigation;178
