(iii) The project will provide material for language planning as well as forprojection for future language situations.Free download from www.hsrcpress.ac.zaCOMMENTS CONCERNING EXAMPLE 3When one compares the language usage and style of presentation in example 3with that of example 1, it is clear that the formulation in example 3 is brief but, nonetheless, adequate. In example 3 the project proposer had to stay withincertain clearly defined parameters as far as the length of the project proposalwas concerned, and it is for this reason that the document is presented in apithy manner. The authors of the research proposal (example 3) had to convince the decisionmakers of the following issues in their brief proposal:(a) the priority and actuality value of the proposed research (comparestatement of the problem and advantages), at this time in South Africa;(b) the feasibility of the research (compare aims and nature of research) as atype of research investment which ought to be made;(c) as far as both (a) and (b) are concerned the proposal-is clear enough. Thedata sources (central statistics for I960, 1970 and 1980) are clearlydescribed, and the eventual utility and implementability of the findings arealso clearly explained (advantages for future language planning).Suggestions for further readingFor those who are interested in further reading matter concerning theconsiderations which have to be borne in mind in the compilation of researchproposals, there are primarily six books that may be consulted. Each of thesebooks also contains an extensive list of references which may be consulted bythose who really wish to make a study of this aspect. The six books are Beasley(1982), Coleman (1980), Davitz and Davitz (1977), Margolin (1983), White(1975) and White (1983).187
