Two useful books to consult inthis regard are Grant proposals that succeeded (V. White Ed.) and Theindividual’s guide to grants (J.B. Margolin). The point of departure inpublications of this nature is that a good deal of competition exists betweenapplicants for research grants. It is however, evident that the requirements thatare set for the proposals that are funded are high, as indicated in the followingreferences. In her book which we referred to above, Margolin presents a list (pp. 214-215of characteristics which are usually typical of good research proposals. Such aproposal:• bears a research idea that is really worthwhile and it takes account ofpertinent problems in the community;• makes it quite clear that the applicant has a particularly suitable approachto the problem and that he or she has developed a plan of action thatlikely to succeed;• creates a feeling of confidence on the part of the sponsor that theresearcher is likely to succeed;• indicates that the research falls within the area in which the sponsor isinterested, and also that the proposed research is likely to constitute agood investment for the sponsor given his specific aims;• provides an indication of the probable results of the proposed projectresults that would justify the anticipated expenditure in time and financeassociated with the project.179
