<strong>Kangaroo</strong> <strong>Island</strong> Futures Authority Draft Economic Impact of Agriculture and Tourism2. Growth was seen to be possible at or near current trend in the short term (0-4 years)mainly utilising latent capacity in available infrastructure and building on past successes indomestic and international markets.3. For growth to be delivered above trend and beyond the short term, it was generally feltthat major investment in key infrastructure including new experiences would be necessaryalong with the development of new / emerging markets. Particular infrastructureidentified to support new international market development such as China includedairport upgrade and additional four plus star accommodation.4. The most common issue raised by stakeholders was the need to address the cost,availability and quality of access options by sea and air for visitors to <strong>Kangaroo</strong> <strong>Island</strong>.However there was a divided view about how to tackle this; some suggested governmentintervention such as a subsidy and others preferring market solutions to address thischallenge.5. Overall the targets of South Australia’s Strategic Plan were well understood bystakeholders as was the importance to ‘have everyone on the same page’ that recognisedthe need for policy alignment as described earlier.As with the tourism sector consultation, the agricultural industry consultation confirmed thatthe <strong>Kangaroo</strong> <strong>Island</strong> agricultural industry had significant potential for growth and there wasoptimism amongst those stakeholders consulted.For growth to be delivered above trend and beyond the short term, it was generally felt thatthe following four aspects of industry development would become the key drivers of growth.These are:• increase in production, brought about primarily by improvements in productivity;• reduced costs, particularly in the area of improved logistics;• premium branding of agricultural products; and• change in land use, in particular in the horticultural and other agricultural sectors.e c o n s e a r c hPage| 11
