ECONOMIC CONTRIBUTION OFTOURISM5.1 Visitor Numbers and Tourism ExpenditureEstimates of the number of visitors and associated visitor expenditure on <strong>Kangaroo</strong> <strong>Island</strong> in2011/12 are detailed for domestic day, domestic overnight and international visitors in Table5.1. Tourism expenditure was estimated using an average of the Tourism Research Australia(TRA 2012) estimates on visitor expenditure on <strong>Kangaroo</strong> <strong>Island</strong> for the last 5 years inflated to2012 dollars. The total number of visitors was sourced from the TOMM visitor exit survey(Colmar Brunton 2012).The total number of tourists visiting <strong>Kangaroo</strong> <strong>Island</strong> in 2011/12 was around 194,000 persons.The associated expenditure for these tourists on <strong>Kangaroo</strong> <strong>Island</strong> in 2011/12 was estimated tobe $123 million (Table 5.1). Domestic day visitors accounted for around 20 per cent of the totalvisitors to the <strong>Island</strong> in 2011/12 but these visitors only accounted for 3 per cent of total visitorexpenditure. Domestic overnight visitors made up the largest share of total visitor numbers (59per cent) and of total visitor expenditure (78 per cent).
