ECONOMIC CONTRIBUTION OFTOURISM5.1 Visitor Numbers and Tourism ExpenditureEstimates of the number of visitors and associated visitor expenditure on Kangaroo Island in2011/12 are detailed for domestic day, domestic overnight and international visitors in Table5.1. Tourism expenditure was estimated using an average of the Tourism Research Australia(TRA 2012) estimates on visitor expenditure on Kangaroo Island for the last 5 years inflated to2012 dollars. The total number of visitors was sourced from the TOMM visitor exit survey(Colmar Brunton 2012).The total number of tourists visiting Kangaroo Island in 2011/12 was around 194,000 persons.The associated expenditure for these tourists on Kangaroo Island in 2011/12 was estimated tobe $123 million (Table 5.1). Domestic day visitors accounted for around 20 per cent of the totalvisitors to the Island in 2011/12 but these visitors only accounted for 3 per cent of total visitorexpenditure. Domestic overnight visitors made up the largest share of total visitor numbers (59per cent) and of total visitor expenditure (78 per cent).
