Kangaroo Island Futures Authority Draft Economic Impact of Agriculture and TourismThe area of land used for horticulture has more than doubled over the 5 year period butremains a relatively small user of agricultural land on Kangaroo Island (362 ha in 2011) (Table6.2.According to the Phylloxera Grape and Industry Board South Australia there were 142 haplanted to winegrapes in 2011/12. The majority of the land planted to winegrapes is plantedwith red varieties (approximately 80 per cent) (Table 6.2). Note the discrepancy with theAgricultural Census data which indicates 118 ha of winegrapes. Although the reference yearfor the Agricultural Census is 12 months earlier, it does reinforce the commonly held view inconsultations that the Census data are generally more likely to understate than overstate thelevel of activity (production, value, area).Table 6.2 Area planted to winegrapes, Kangaroo Island, 2011/12Winegrape Variety Area (ha) Share (%)Cabernet Franc 6 4%Cabernet Sauvignon 46 32%Merlot 5 4%Other red 7 5%Shiraz 51 36%Chardonnay 10 7%Other white 5 4%Riesling 3 2%Sauvignon Blanc 7 5%Unknown Variety 3 2%Total 142 100%Source: PGIBSA 2012The value of agricultural production for the three census years, 2001, 2006 and 2011 isprovided in Table 6.3 in nominal dollars. In nominal terms the total value of agriculturedecreased by approximately 23 per cent between 2001 ($45.6m) and 2006 ($35.0m) butalmost doubled between 2006 and 2011 ($67.4m).It should be noted that the value of agricultural production in 2006 was particularly low due tothe drought. Over the 10 year period, 2001 to 2011, the total value of agriculture increased by48 per cent. In real terms, over the same period, the total value of agriculture increased byaround 10 per cent.e c o n s e a r c hPage| 20
