LIBRARY SERVICESDavis Memorial Library, a vital component of <strong>Methodist</strong> <strong>University</strong>, provides access <strong>to</strong> resources,knowledge, information, and ideas for <strong>the</strong> intellectual inquiry of students, faculty and staff; supports <strong>the</strong>instructional program; and promotes scholarship on campus. Fundamental <strong>to</strong> this philosophy of serviceis a commitment <strong>to</strong> freedom of information and equity of access <strong>to</strong> information.The library houses more than 95,000 books and over 4,400 audiovisual materials such as DVDs, VHStapes,CDs, and CD ROMS. <strong>Student</strong>s also have access <strong>to</strong> over 26,645 journals and 25,000 e-booksand audio books. More information about <strong>the</strong> library is available athttp://www.methodist.edu/library/davis.htm.The library website provides access <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> library’s online catalog, journal databases, subject and researchguides, and more. The library offers many general and subject-specific databases for locating journaland newspaper articles as well as book reviews, monographs, reports, etc; <strong>the</strong>se include: AcademicSearch Premier, ACS Web Editions, Lexis-Nexis, PsycArticles, etc. The majority of <strong>the</strong> resources can beaccessed both on and off campus. <strong>Student</strong>s may gain off-campus access by using <strong>the</strong>ir MU emailuser name (everything before <strong>the</strong> @ symbol) and <strong>the</strong>ir MU email password. In addition, patrons canrenew books, place holds and request interlibrary loan service (ILL) using <strong>the</strong> online catalog.The library provides access <strong>to</strong> computers for use of <strong>the</strong> internet and word processing. Designatedcomputers provide access <strong>to</strong> specialized resources or software in athletic training, geographic informationsystems, image manipulation, legal research, and statistics. Complete information and links <strong>to</strong> resourcesare available on <strong>the</strong> library’s website. Wireless service is available throughout <strong>the</strong> 1st and 2nd floors.The following library services are offered: individual research assistance, interlibrary loan, information literacyclasses, and instruction in <strong>the</strong> use of library equipment. Available equipment includes: pho<strong>to</strong>copier, microformreader/printers, audio/visual equipment, opaque projec<strong>to</strong>r, overhead projec<strong>to</strong>r, and scanners. Study optionsinclude: three group study rooms, six individual study rooms, lounge seating, individual carrels and large tablesand areas set aside for Quiet Study. Rooms may be reserved. The library also has a reading café, <strong>the</strong> Novel Brew.Library Circulation Policies for <strong>Student</strong>sA current <strong>University</strong> pho<strong>to</strong> ID is required <strong>to</strong> borrow materials and <strong>to</strong> use some equipment. <strong>Student</strong>s areresponsible for any items borrowed with <strong>the</strong>ir library account. <strong>Student</strong>s should notify <strong>the</strong> library immediatelyif <strong>the</strong>y lose <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>Methodist</strong> <strong>University</strong> ID card.How <strong>to</strong> Obtain/Renew a Library CardObtain <strong>University</strong> ID from security. Visit <strong>the</strong> library <strong>to</strong> update your library account information.Interlibrary loanMaterials borrowed through interlibrary loan (ILL) are due back at <strong>the</strong> library on <strong>the</strong> date printed on <strong>the</strong>ILL slip. If an ILL item is overdue, all ILL borrowing privileges are suspended, and a fee of $1 per day isassessed until <strong>the</strong> cost of <strong>the</strong> item is reached. <strong>Student</strong>s may request renewals by contacting <strong>the</strong> ILL officea week prior <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> due date. It is <strong>the</strong> student’s responsibility <strong>to</strong> pay for lost, s<strong>to</strong>len, or damaged ILL itemsat <strong>the</strong> price assessed by <strong>the</strong> lending library. Patrons who do not pick up requested materials within twoweeks of notification are charged with an administrative fee of $5. Pho<strong>to</strong>copies are <strong>the</strong> student’s <strong>to</strong> keep.Regular abuse of interlibrary loan policies will result in suspension of ILL privileges for <strong>the</strong> current semester.Suspension of check out privilegesBorrowing privileges for all materials (including reserve materials) are suspended for <strong>the</strong> following reasons:• overdue interlibrary loan material, overdue for longer than 2 months• overdue multimedia CDROM, video, DVD, big book, kit or equipment, overdue for longer than 2 months• overdue reserve materialsPATRON BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONSPatron Behavior PoliciesIf patrons fail <strong>to</strong> comply with library policies or <strong>the</strong> direction of library staff, <strong>the</strong>y will be asked <strong>to</strong> leave <strong>the</strong>building. If patrons do not leave <strong>the</strong> building when asked, Security will be called.Food and DrinkFood is only allowed in <strong>the</strong> Novel Brew Café. Drinks are permitted provided <strong>the</strong>y have lids (<strong>the</strong>rmos,soda bottle, paper cup with lid & straw), however, no drinks are allowed in <strong>the</strong> bookstacks.Alcohol and TobaccoUse of alcohol, <strong>to</strong>bacco, or any o<strong>the</strong>r drugs (o<strong>the</strong>r than with prescription) are not allowed in <strong>the</strong> library.WeaponsNo weapons are allowed in <strong>the</strong> library.29
