Room Paint Policy<strong>Student</strong>s may not paint <strong>the</strong>ir own rooms.Room SelectionThe room selection process is designed <strong>to</strong> assist students in securing a residence hall room for <strong>the</strong> upcomingacademic year. Each year <strong>the</strong> Department of Housing and Residence Life will announce <strong>the</strong> process forselection. <strong>Student</strong>s will be notified in advance of <strong>the</strong> housing selection process. Priority is given for selectionin <strong>the</strong> following order: current residential students, transfer /graduate students, and commuter students.Room Change ProcedureThe student requesting a room change must first consult with <strong>the</strong> Residential Coordina<strong>to</strong>r. Room changerequests will not be granted until after <strong>the</strong> drop/add period. The Residential Coordina<strong>to</strong>r will give acomplete explanation of <strong>the</strong> procedure that must be followed <strong>to</strong> complete an authorized room change.After <strong>the</strong> explanation of <strong>the</strong> procedure by <strong>the</strong> Residential Coordina<strong>to</strong>r, <strong>the</strong> student must complete <strong>the</strong>necessary forms and return <strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Residential Coordina<strong>to</strong>r. All room changes must be approvedby <strong>the</strong> Residential Coordina<strong>to</strong>r and will not be approved until after <strong>the</strong> drop/add period. <strong>Student</strong>s mayrequest a room change during <strong>the</strong> room change period.O<strong>the</strong>r room changes after this period will be based on administrative decision. You must complete yourmove within 48 hours.Overflow HousingFrom time <strong>to</strong> time less than ideal room situations arise. These include, but are not limited <strong>to</strong> being placed in aResident Assistant room or being placed in a Triple-occupancy room. As space is made available, residentsin ei<strong>the</strong>r and/or both of <strong>the</strong>se situations will be asked <strong>to</strong> move by <strong>the</strong> Residential Coordina<strong>to</strong>r of <strong>the</strong> building.Unauthorized Room ChangesUnauthorized room changes are defined as those room changes that occur without properly following<strong>the</strong> room change procedure as stated above.<strong>Student</strong>s who make an unauthorized or illegal room change are assessed a $100.00 fine and face judicialaction. Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, <strong>the</strong> student is responsible for any damages found in <strong>the</strong> room vacated. In <strong>the</strong> even<strong>to</strong>f an illegal or unauthorized room change, <strong>the</strong> student(s) will move back in<strong>to</strong> original assignments untilproper authorization can be obtained. Triple-occupancy rooms are included in this policy and will beenforced by <strong>the</strong> Residential Coordina<strong>to</strong>r of <strong>the</strong> building.Smoking PolicyAll residence halls at <strong>Methodist</strong> <strong>University</strong> are non-smoking, including balconies of apartments andpatios <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> rear of buildings. <strong>Student</strong>s who choose <strong>to</strong> smoke outside <strong>the</strong> residence halls must do so indesignated areas defined by Housing and Residence Life. The areas must be kept clean. Smoking shallnot take place within fifty (50) feet of <strong>the</strong> building. Smoking receptacles are located in <strong>the</strong>se areas forproper disposal of cigar and cigarette butts. Failure <strong>to</strong> comply may result in fines as deemed appropriateby <strong>the</strong> Residential Coordina<strong>to</strong>r. For fur<strong>the</strong>r information please consult <strong>the</strong> judicial code in this Handbook.Residence Hall VisitationThe Department of Housing and Residence Life believes that residence hall students at <strong>Methodist</strong><strong>University</strong> are adults. With adulthood comes a different type of responsibility. The responsibility forvisitation in <strong>the</strong> residence halls lies directly with <strong>the</strong> residents. The visitation policy at <strong>Methodist</strong> <strong>University</strong>is enforced in all Residence Halls and encompasses <strong>the</strong> following guidelines:1. The residence halls are open for visitation from 9:00 a.m. <strong>to</strong> 1:00 a.m. Sunday through Thursdaynights and 9:00 a.m. <strong>to</strong> 2:00 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights. Each residence hall has <strong>the</strong> right <strong>to</strong>set its own visitation times within <strong>the</strong>se hours.2. Lobbies of each hall should be evacuated at <strong>the</strong> end of visitation hours. If sought from <strong>the</strong> ResidentialCoordina<strong>to</strong>r of <strong>the</strong> building, exceptions may be granted for <strong>the</strong> purpose of studying or group meetings.3. No person may have more than two guests at any one time. For special permission regarding familymembers, see <strong>the</strong> Residential Coordina<strong>to</strong>r.4. <strong>Student</strong>s must sign in ALL (male or female) guests using full names in <strong>the</strong> lobby of <strong>the</strong> residence hall.5. Guests of <strong>the</strong> residence hall must be escorted at all times6. It is <strong>the</strong> responsibility of <strong>the</strong> resident <strong>to</strong> make sure that his/her guest abides by all residence hallrules established by <strong>Methodist</strong> <strong>University</strong>. Violations by guests are considered violations by <strong>the</strong>resident. In cases involving <strong>Methodist</strong> <strong>University</strong> students as guests, (not only will) <strong>the</strong> host be heldresponsible,( <strong>the</strong> guest(s) will be also).44
