Studies have shown that living in <strong>the</strong> residence halls makes a great impact on studentsuccess both academically and socially. Research has proven that students who live in <strong>the</strong> residence hallsare more likely <strong>to</strong> achieve a higher grade point average, complete <strong>the</strong>ir degree in four years, participatein more extracurricular activities and have positive self image and go on <strong>to</strong> attend graduate school.One of <strong>the</strong> purposes of <strong>the</strong> Department of Housing and Residence Life is <strong>to</strong> aid students in making<strong>the</strong>ir time at <strong>Methodist</strong> <strong>University</strong> a valuable developmental experience. The residence halls provide astructured environment for students <strong>to</strong> live, work and grow <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r while gaining from experiences thatunite <strong>the</strong>m and make <strong>the</strong>m a united fellowship. <strong>Methodist</strong> <strong>University</strong> supports this precept.Freshmen and Sophomore ResidencyIt is <strong>the</strong> policy of <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> that, space permitting, all students who have earned 62 hours orless must live in <strong>University</strong>-operated residence halls unless <strong>the</strong>y commute from <strong>the</strong> home of aparent or legal guardian. A local resident is defined as a person residing within 60 miles of <strong>the</strong><strong>University</strong>. All requests for waivers of <strong>the</strong> policy must be directed in writing <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dean of <strong>Student</strong>s.While any student is in residence at <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>, <strong>the</strong> occupancy of <strong>the</strong> residence hall room is considered <strong>the</strong>use of a <strong>University</strong> facility. This usage does not give <strong>the</strong> same latitude, as does a lessee or leaser rental contract.37
