Appeal BoardThe President of <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> appoints <strong>the</strong> Appeal Board which consists of: two administra<strong>to</strong>rs, twofaculty members and three student representatives nominated by <strong>the</strong> President of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Student</strong> GovernmentAssociation. The Chairperson will convene <strong>the</strong> Appeal Board when notified by <strong>the</strong> Associate Dean of<strong>Student</strong>s that <strong>the</strong> Review Board has set aside a decision of <strong>the</strong> Dean of <strong>Student</strong>s. (A minimum of fourmembers of <strong>the</strong> Appeal Board are required for a review with at least one member from each category(faculty, staff, administra<strong>to</strong>r and <strong>the</strong> appointed chairperson). The Associate Dean of <strong>Student</strong>s will present<strong>the</strong> case for <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>. <strong>Student</strong>s making an appeal before <strong>the</strong> Appeal Board may enlist <strong>the</strong> aid of anymember of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Methodist</strong> <strong>University</strong> community, including o<strong>the</strong>r students, faculty or administra<strong>to</strong>rs. Parentsmay also advise students. Outside counsel may be present only <strong>to</strong> advise students and is not allowed <strong>to</strong>speak for <strong>the</strong> defense. Sessions of <strong>the</strong> Appeal Board are closed. The Appeal Board has <strong>the</strong> authority <strong>to</strong>:1.) <strong>to</strong> affirm <strong>the</strong> decision of <strong>the</strong> Dean of <strong>Student</strong>s2.) <strong>to</strong> negate or <strong>to</strong> alter <strong>the</strong> decision of <strong>the</strong> Dean of <strong>Student</strong>s3.) render a new decision and impose new sanctions if appropriateRulings of <strong>the</strong> Appeal Board are final.SANCTIONSThe following are sanctions that may result when a student has been found in violation of <strong>the</strong> code ofconduct or residence hall guidelines. These penalties are not absolutes and may be amended <strong>to</strong>benefit students in particular situations.A Written WarningThis shall be defined as a statement by <strong>the</strong> <strong>Student</strong> Community Court or <strong>the</strong> Dean of <strong>Student</strong>s of <strong>the</strong>circumstances of <strong>the</strong> violation and an admonition that is made a part of <strong>the</strong> student’s record in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Student</strong>Development and Services Office.A Social RestrictionThis shall be defined as a restriction of a student from one or more of <strong>the</strong> following activities for a periodof time specified by <strong>the</strong> <strong>Student</strong> Community Court or <strong>the</strong> Dean of <strong>Student</strong>s:a. from all intramural sportsb. from participation in clubsc. from operating mo<strong>to</strong>rized vehicles on campusd. from participation in visitation in residence hallse. from living in campus residence hallsf. from attending athletic eventsCommunity Service WorkThe Community Court and/or <strong>the</strong> Dean of <strong>Student</strong>s may assign a specific number of hours ranging from5 - 100 for community service. Community service work may be assigned on campus or in <strong>the</strong> Fayettevillecommunity. This is a sanction imposed for <strong>the</strong> benefit of <strong>the</strong> student and <strong>the</strong> community. A person willbe assigned <strong>to</strong> supervise <strong>the</strong> work and report when <strong>the</strong> hours are completed.Disciplinary ProbationThe <strong>Student</strong> Community Court, <strong>the</strong> Dean of <strong>Student</strong>s and <strong>the</strong> Associate Dean of <strong>Student</strong>s may place astudent on disciplinary probation on which, <strong>the</strong> student continues in attendance; however, <strong>the</strong> student is indanger of suspension from <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> for any breach of good conduct during <strong>the</strong> period of probation.Fur<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong> student may not hold any general elective office while on disciplinary probation. A recordof <strong>the</strong> disciplinary probation, circumstances, and sanctions is kept in <strong>the</strong> student’s file in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Student</strong>Development and Services Office.Psychological EvaluationThe Dean of <strong>Student</strong>s may require a student <strong>to</strong> be evaluated by <strong>Methodist</strong> <strong>University</strong> Counseling andPsychological Services or by a local mental health specialist. A copy of <strong>the</strong> results of <strong>the</strong> evaluation,which can be used <strong>to</strong> determine disciplinary sanctions, will be made available <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dean of <strong>Student</strong>s.Based on <strong>the</strong> evaluation, <strong>the</strong> Dean may also require fur<strong>the</strong>r counseling or treatment as a part of disciplinarysanctions. In that case, <strong>the</strong> content of consequent counseling or treatment will be held strictly confidentialbetween <strong>the</strong> student and <strong>the</strong> mental health specialist. The Dean of <strong>Student</strong>s may require documentationof <strong>the</strong> student’s participation, but information about <strong>the</strong> content of <strong>the</strong> treatment will remain confidential.84
