ForewordIt is a great pleasure to introduce this assessment of Cameroon’s forestsector reforms. The book testifies to our achievements, weighs emergingchallenges, and highlights the way forward. It comes at an importantjuncture, when reforms must gain new momentum.Our forests are a national and global treasure to be safeguarded andsustained. The reforms described were designed based on the fundamentalprinciple that forests, when properly managed, will sustain oureconomy, improve the welfare of our poorest citizens, and protect theenvironment and biodiversity into the future. Our convictions havedriven a challenging and often unpopular reform agenda that strikes atthe heart of the vested interests that have long defined the sector—industrial,political, administrative. As a result, we are reinstating rule oflaw and placing more decision-making power in the hands of civil societyand local government institutions. Thus, our work concerns more thanthe nation’s forests.
