2005 Forest and Environment Sector Policy Letter 159cerns have remained administrative formalities within the context <strong>of</strong>forest management operations. It is therefore necessary to ensure rigorousapplication <strong>of</strong> environmental management plans, especially in someforest management units situated near protected areas where environmentalassessments are a key precondition. Besides, it will be necessaryto strengthen and step up the operational abilities <strong>of</strong> the institution incharge <strong>of</strong> the environment and <strong>of</strong> advisory bodies such as the NationalAdvisory Committee on the Environment and Sustainable Development(CNCEEDD).6. Protected areas—National parksA network <strong>of</strong> protected areas has been developed especially over thelast fifteen years, thanks to the Biodiversity Conservation and ManagementProgramme in <strong>Cameroon</strong> (PCGBC). Wildlife protected areas cover7 211 819 hectares representing 15.1 percent <strong>of</strong> national territory.This surface area is distributed as follows: 10 National parks; 10 Wildlifereserves; 1 Wildlife sanctuary; 3 Zoological gardens; 40 Huntingzones; 16 community-based hunting zones which have been placed atthe disposal <strong>of</strong> village communities. <strong>The</strong> technical and financial management<strong>of</strong> community-based zones is the responsibility <strong>of</strong> the populationswho may, if they so desire, seek the technical assistance <strong>of</strong> the staff <strong>of</strong> theMinistry <strong>of</strong> Forestry and Wildlife.Besides, a method <strong>of</strong> assessing efficient management <strong>of</strong> all nationalparks has been established.7.
