African Forest Law Enforcement and Governance (AFLEG)Like most African countries, Cameroon committed to be part of the initiativelaunched in 1989 by the G-8 countries to combat illegal exploitation, illicit trade in forest products and corruption in the forest sector. This initiative aims to stimulate, at the highest political level, the willof the international community to curb these scourges in order to ensuresustainable management of our forest resources. This explains why theefforts made by Cameroon to meet this imperative have, over the lastten years, been marked by political, legislative and institutional reforms, and adoption of basic instruments that should promote conservation andsustainable management of natural forests. This concerns especially the following:• Adoption of a forest exploitation system that makes use of developmentplans aimed at ensuring sustainable management of productionforests;• Improvement of forest governance by setting up a legal frameworkconducive to the development of the private sector, which guaranteestransparency in the process of allocating forest concessions and supervisingexploitation activities, the major innovation being the use of callfor tenders and the presence of independent observers;• Adoption of Principles, Criteria and Indicators (PCI) for sustainablemanagement of forests in Cameroon in December 2004 is one of thelinks in the certification chain.Progress made in terms of reforms geared towards the conservation andsustainable management of forests in Cameroon is remarkable, and thusdeserves to be appraised and evaluated.
