6 NUMISMATIC CHRONICLE.13of Syracuse. In the new edition of Historia Numornm, however, Dr. Head " says: The Thirds frequently havethe Sicilian triskeles below the head of the city, showingthem to have been struck under Sicilian influence, and perhapsas late as the time of Agathocles." 14 But the mostconclusive arguments for assigning these pieces to thisperiod are advanced by Dr. Regling in his monograph onTeriua, 15 where he mentions three important facts :(i) Following Hill, that the triskeles must be regarded asthe personal signet of Agathocles rather than as the badgeof Sicily at this period; (ii)That the style of theseThirds isextremely like that of Agathocles' tetradrachms[PI. I. 1] ; (iii) That the onlyhoard of coinsever found on the site of Ancient Terina consisted ofcopper coins of Agathocles. This last is a significantfact. On looking at the map one can well imagine thatthe city, which lay within sight of the port of Hipponium, would be forced to accept the rule of Agathocles, thoughit was perhaps euphemistically called an" alliance," or a" " liberation from the Bruttian yoke.METAPONTUM.Obv.
