PALMER'S GREEN HOARD. 79a further grant from the King that all moneys, which hecaused to be delivered through the King's land at theexchange, shall be paid to the Earl or his assignsat hispleasure with a moiety of the profit of the said exchange.Again, on April 27 of the same year, William Hardel, asWarden of the Exchange (Cambii), was appointed tosuperintend the getting in of the old moneyissue of the new ;and theand on the following dayit was furtherordered that Hardel's appointmentas Warden of thewhole Mint shall be noticed to all moneyers (monetarii]and changers throughout England. These last two extracts from the Patent Kolls showvery clearly that at least on March 2, 1248, the newcoinage had already been issued, and itmay thereforebe safely concluded, apart from any other evidence, that,as the Earl of Cornwall had from June 18 to November 1(AllSaints' Day) to prepare his new dies, he was readyto begin the issue of his new money at the appointedtime. Moreover, as he had lent the King 10,000 marks,he was no doubt anxious to see the return of his moneyas soon as possible. The extension of his grant fromfive years to seven and then immediately to twelveproves that he had cause for some anxiety. But beyondthese facts we have other confirmatory information fromtwo quite independent sources.John de Oxenede, under date 1247, relates that inthat year the English money began to be intolerableaccount of the detestable practice of clipping. To remedythis evil the King ordered that a new die should be madeon which the cross was to extend to the outer edge of thecoin, which should remain of the same weight and fineness. So that ifany portiononof the cross should beclipped the coin would not be acceptable in currency.
