42 NUMISMATIC CHKONICLE.2. THE PERIOD OF SYRACUSAN INFLUENCE : DIES BYTHE HAND OF EVAENETOS.The new discovery recorded in the present Section maybe thought to give something like the coup de grace tothe above-mentioned attempts to exclude and n onthe master-piecesof the coinage of Terina from thecategory of artists' signatures. The well-authenticatedappearance of the signature of one of the greatest ofmonetary artists on a Terinaean die belonging to theimmediately succeeding period, throws at the same timea retrospective light on the traditions of the TerinaMint. It has been demonstrated in the preceding Section, that the earlier signed work on the coins of Terinabears strong evidence of the influence of Attic models. The works with which we have at present to deal beareven more conclusively the impress of Syracusan art, imposed by the ascendancy of the elder Dionysios.Dr. Eegling, in his excellent monograph, has shownthat, about the beginning of the fourth century, cointypesof a " new style" 42make their appearance atTerina, followed by others in a style justly described byhim as " rich."The obverse type of the " new style" shows the headof Nike Terina with somewhat elaborately curlinglocks behind, caught up in a star-spangled sphendone[PI. IV. 16]. The inscription in front of the head isTEPINAIQN. Formally the obverse of this die may beregarded as bearinga certain relation to some of the42Terina, p. 27, LL " : Neuer Stil : bald nach 400 v. C."
