A crown, in thfc place <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> customary small cross.Tournai. A small tower.Arras. A lozenge.St. Quentin. A rowel or mullet.Chalons. A crescent.Troyes. A rose.Macon. A trefoil.Nevers. A star.Auxerre. A mill-rind (fer de moulin).Dijon. A little sun.Tournai never recognized Henry, <strong>and</strong> consequently nomint was established by him <strong>the</strong>re. On <strong>the</strong> contrary,Charles himself established a mint at Tournai, where hestruck salutes in <strong>the</strong> year 1433. 29 It is interesting tonote that in <strong>the</strong> ordinances <strong>of</strong> Charles VII <strong>the</strong>re is nomention made <strong>of</strong> an issue <strong>of</strong> salutes, but he strucksalutes both at Tournai <strong>and</strong> at Beauvais. <strong>The</strong> formertown was situatedin <strong>the</strong> middle <strong>of</strong>, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> latter closeto, <strong>the</strong> country occupied by Henry, <strong>and</strong> it is easy tounderst<strong>and</strong> that it was necessary for Charles VII tostrike coins <strong>the</strong>re <strong>of</strong> a type <strong>and</strong> value to which <strong>the</strong> inhabitants<strong>of</strong> those towns would be accustomed.
