276 NUMISMATIC CHRONICLE.been described in the report on the excavations for thatyear (Archaeologia Aeliana, 3rd series, vol. v) ;itmaybe noticed again here, since no description of it has yetbeen given in the Numismatic Chronicle. It was foundin the disused furnace of a building of mean constructionand very late Eoman date.Close to the very end of theKoman occupation, but before the deposit of the hoard, the floor of this building had been raised to the level ofthe top of the furnace, leaving the latter as a convenienthiding-placebelow the floor level. The treasure waswrapped up in a piece of leaden sheeting, and comprisedforty-eight aurei solidi and a gold ring with smallround loop and large bezel from which the stone waswanting. The coins belonged to the following emperors :Valentinian I, 4 ; Valens, 2 ; Gratian, 16 ;Valentinian II,8 ; Theodosius, 5 ; Magnus Maxirnus, 13. Three typesof reverse are represented, namely, VICTORIA AVGG (33specimens), RESTITVTOR REIPVBLICAE (14 specimens),PRINCIPIVM IVVENTVTIS (1 specimen). The somewhatrarer type of VOTA PVBLICA is not represented in thehoard. The PRINCIPIVM IVVENTVTIS coin of Gratian isfrom the Constantinople mint ;two of the four coins ofValentinian I are from the Eoman mint ;one aureus ofGratian and one of Theodosius are stamped COM withoutfurther specification of the place of minting the;remaining forty-three aurei were minted at Trier. Thusforty-three out of forty-eight examples are the productof a single mint. Three officinae were in operation atTrier up to the revolt of Maximus in 383, and theirrespective mint-marks were TROBC, TROBS, TROBT.Thenumber of examples from each are eleven, four, andfifteen respectively.
