In consequencemuch remains to be done in <strong>the</strong>ir classification <strong>and</strong>attributions.In itself <strong>the</strong> series presents a high artisticst<strong>and</strong>ard, acareful portraiture, <strong>and</strong> a wide variety <strong>of</strong> type, ranging,as it does, from 312 B.C. to 69 B.C. <strong>The</strong> famoustetradrachm <strong>of</strong> Antiochus VI well illustrates this, orsuperbPI. X. 9.drachm which is described<strong>the</strong>below <strong>and</strong> figured onBut <strong>the</strong> interest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> series does not abide athome, <strong>and</strong> is in no sense confined to narrow limits.<strong>The</strong>Seleucid kings, perhaps more than any o<strong>the</strong>r personages<strong>of</strong> antiquity, have pr<strong>of</strong>oundly influenced <strong>the</strong> life <strong>and</strong>thought <strong>of</strong> to-day.<strong>The</strong>y came into contact again <strong>and</strong>again with <strong>the</strong> Jews. <strong>The</strong> Hellenizing policy <strong>of</strong>Antiochus Epiphanes produced <strong>the</strong> Maccabees. <strong>The</strong>reVOL.
