motitons <strong>and</strong> allANGLO-GALLIC COINS. 371o<strong>the</strong>r gold coins, except <strong>the</strong> salute <strong>and</strong><strong>the</strong> noble, was forbidden. 21On May 24, 1427, a new gold coin, <strong>the</strong> angelot, wasissued. 22 <strong>The</strong> order provides for <strong>the</strong> issue <strong>of</strong> petitsdeniers <strong>of</strong> fine gold, called angelots, which should becurrent at <strong>the</strong> rate <strong>of</strong> three for two <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> salutes <strong>the</strong>nstruck in <strong>the</strong> coinage <strong>of</strong> France ; <strong>the</strong>y were to be struckat <strong>the</strong> rate <strong>of</strong> 105 to <strong>the</strong> mark, giving a weight <strong>of</strong> 38'6grains. <strong>The</strong> issue was to be made without delay.On June 22, 1435, Charles VII issued an order 23 that<strong>the</strong> blancs bearing <strong>the</strong> arms <strong>of</strong> France <strong>and</strong> Engl<strong>and</strong>,<strong>the</strong>ret<strong>of</strong>ore current for 8 deniers parisis, should be currentfor 6 deniers parisis.<strong>The</strong> Manuscrit Frangais 5524 states 24 that on July 21,1435, were struck by order <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> king, angelots currentfor 32 sols 6 deniers tournois, at <strong>the</strong> rate <strong>of</strong> 48 to <strong>the</strong>mark, giving a weight <strong>of</strong> 84'66 grains.It illustrates <strong>the</strong>coin (Fig. 9), which it will be noticed is <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same type as<strong>the</strong> ordinary angelot, with <strong>the</strong> addition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> h below <strong>the</strong>cross on <strong>the</strong> reverse, <strong>and</strong> bears <strong>the</strong> mint-mark <strong>of</strong> Eouen.It seems doubtful whe<strong>the</strong>r this issue ever took place./'*FIG. 9.
